Marino's ICU Book has remained one of the most accessible and comprehensive intensive care resources available. The 3rd version, however, was woefully out of date -- until now. The 4th edition is fully updated, features colored illustrations and photographs, and offers a searchable online-version of the text for use with your iPad/smartphone/etc.

Despite owning a library of critical care texts, I won't often find myself reaching for my copy of Vincent's Critical Care again. This is an indispensable resource for medical students, residents, fellows, attendings, Pas and critical care RNs, etc. More than just a technical manual, it is often insightful, whimsical, and poignant. There are very few medical references that you can sit down with and actually read recreationally, but this is one of them.

Everyone laughs when I tell them how this is the best book I've ever bought. I'm not kidding, if you do any sort of critical care work (ground or air transport, ICU, sick med-surg patients etc) you should definitely buy this book. The fact that you get the full, searchable version on inkling is amazing. I use this to look up all sorts of crazy patient conditions in flight, double-check medications or treatment plans, and just to get laughs. The author is SO good at making difficult concepts very easy to understand. A few of my coworkers have bought this as well. Buy the paper version to read, then install the Ebook version to use as a reference while working. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Fantastic book! Easy to read, with all the necessary and important information.
A couple of things outdated but you can't ask in a book a 100% up to date information. The application for tablet and phone is by far the best feature of all! I never get caught without knowing at least something during ICU shifts.

I've seen 'em all -- by and far, Dubin's book is the best!!

Over the last 25 years of my medical career, I have read just about every book published on EKG interpretation. As a full-time educator, I appreciate simplicity, especially when it is totally practical. Of all the texts I've seen, Dubin's "Rapid Interpretation of EKGs" is simply the best. He explains intricate concepts with simplistic beauty, using a unique programmed learning style and original figures. If you don't learn "all there is to know" about EKGs from this book, you will never really understand them the rest of your career... Mikel A. Dr. Dubin's book is a learning masterpiece!

Usually I'm not one to write reviews or comments. Although a physician, I never properly mastered EKG's. Initially I was very discouraged by a book touted to be "the only EKG book you'll ever need" (very deceptive). I was advised to get Dr. Dubin's text, which I believe to be the world's best seller. What a serendipitous surprise! This book is so easy to follow and digest, giving me an immediate grasp of practical concepts and in-depth understanding of cardiac physiology. Never have I been so pleased with a medical textbook and useful knowledge that it provides.

This was a great book! I am a nursing student and I was a little intimidated at first because I was afraid that a book written by a doctor on the subject matter would be to complex, however he made it very plain and simple. If I can understand Ekg interpretation, anyone can!

An Indomitable Young Lady

Neil Gaiman has shown as admirable knack for fiction for young adults and children as he has shown in adult fiction. I am tempted to attribute this to his experience writing graphic stories, but it is really something more than that. It is an ability to touch the sources of wonder and fear without the necessity of excessive gore and grimness. Not that bad things don't happen in Gaiman's tales, but they tend to go right to the heart, instead of the stomach.
This tale is about a remarkable young woman named Coraline (who remains polite, even when you call her Caroline). Recently she and her parents have moved into one of those wondrous old houses that are sometimes converted into flats. Both Coraline's parents work at home, and sometimes she feels a bit ignored and bored. Nevertheless, she is encouraged to explore and so she does. First her neighbors. The Misses Spink and Forcible are two retired thespians who live together in the bottom flat, and up above is Mr. Bobo, who is an avid trainer of mice. Having run out of people, Coraline investigates the premises. Her flat is most unusual; it has 21 windows and 14 doors. Only one door is locked, and that only leads to a brick wall.
Well, most of the time it does. On some occasions, it opens up on a world just like this one, where Coraline finds her other mother, other father, and even other neighbors. At first it seems quite nice, people pay more attention to one there, the toys are better, and, of all things, the cat talks. Soon Coraline finds all is not quite as it seems. Everyone has buttons for eyes, her other mother has strange hands that seem to have a life of their own, and there are a remarkable number of rats. In fact, if you dig deep enough, things are really most horrible. Coraline has much to do to make things come around right.
With young people's fiction, adults are often driven to worry about what the stories teach and if they will have ill effects on their child. Coraline's plight, being stranded away from her parents amidst a world full of thinly veiled threats may be uncomfortable for a sensitive child. Yet things work out well in the end, and Coraline is an excellent role model, who understands what courage truly is and is in touch with what is really important to her. Equally, this is a work of art and it is never too early to encourage children to develop a sense of what good writing really is.
Fortunately, this really is a book that an adult can enjoy as well. And I can't help but think that it might stimulate some interesting family discussions. I would recommend it to anyone who believes that children can benefit from new and unusual reading experiences. I also should mention the delightful illustrations from the pen of Dave McKean, a long time designer and illustrator for Neil Gaiman's graphic work.

deliciously creepy

Neil Gaiman is a master storyteller. His diction is perfect. He does not waste words, but is not miserly with them either. His descriptions never fail to rouse a knowing nod and smile from the reader. Even when writing a quick throwaway piece in his journal...his style is impeccable.
For this novel, Neil sets his eyes on another audience: young adults. He gives children (or, as he has said, 'strange little girls of all ages and genders' - a nod to his friend Tori Amos and her 2001 "Strange Little Girls" album) a deliciously creepy novel about a girl, a new flat, and her other mother.
Coraline (not Caroline, even though all of the adults who live in the other flats keep on saying it that way and ignoring her corrections) and her parents move into a new home. One day, she pesters her father one too many times, so he sends her off on an expedition: find the water heater, count everything blue, count all the doors and windows. She does so, and is shocked to find that there are 13 doors that open and one that doesn't. She asks her mother what is behind the 14th door, and is told that it was bricked over when the house was broken up into flats. Her mother unlocks the door to show her this, but doesn't lock it again.
Later, Coraline creeps back, and finds that the door opens into another flat. It is just like her own, but not quite. In her room (green and pink, not boring like her own), she finds the sorts of clothing that she thinks she would have if she could pick out her own wardrobe -- not a grey school skirt, but costumes. In the kitchen, she finds her other parents -- not her real parents who work and don't play with her, but other parents who cook real food (not something from a "recipe" involving tarragon and butter beans) and dote upon her. Coraline knows that this is not right, and returns to her own flat.
Thus begins Coraline's adventure. The other mother steals Coraline's parents. Coraline returns to the other flat to get them back. Along the way, she makes friends with the most sarcastic of cats and finds the ghosts of other children who were stolen away by the other mother.
Gaiman's mastery of timing has never been shown so well than in this novel. Just when things are getting really scary, he breaks in with a droll and dry line that makes the reader laugh. This is a novel that is just begging to be read aloud -- as Neil Gaiman himself did on 02 July 2002 in Berkeley, California. His audience, around 500 people, hung on his every word. The adults in the audience were just as delighted as the children to have someone read such a delicious story to them. If you dislike reading aloud, you can always buy the audio CD (complete, unabridged) version of this story.

Delightful and Engaging!

I received the audio CD of Coraline in the mail yesterday in the early afternoon. I'd read the book, and heard parts of it read by the author here and there, so I put it on for background, while I did other things. The "other things" didn't even get started for roughly three hours.
The recording begins with a verse from a quirky Gothic Archies tune in which Stephin Merritt sing-songs, "You are not my mother, and I want to go home," over layers of atmospheric dings and bonga-bongas. The song echoes the story's cohesion of humor and spookiness, and is split into three parts, playing a bit before each of the three CDs.
The story itself is a delight. Coraline is a typical child-explorer, examining the house and grounds to which she recently moved, uncovering the strange personalities that inhabit her world, and discovering that a door in her home which was previously bricked-up actually leads to a misty echo-world where old, hungry, button-eyed creatures masquerade as her other parents, having parent-napped her real parents, while trying to convince her to stay there forever so that they can keep her soul . . . Well. Perhaps her story is not so typical. Not typical, also, are the fantastic characters who pop in and out of the story, such as the Slavic mustached man who lives in the upper flat and is training a mouse circus, and his other-self, or the pair of dotty, but kind, retired theater mavens who read tea leaves and worry about their dogs' tummies, and their less-benevolent, other-world counterparts. Like any true exploration story, Coraline has an assistant for the more dangerous times, in the form of a condescending, snarkily witty black cat. And like every true exploration story, there are acts of great courage and startling discoveries made along the way.
Neil Gaiman is an engaging and expressive reader, as well as writer. He infuses the characters with a spark all their own, changing cadences and even accents, always to the benefit of the story. The pacing is smooth and quick, with minute dips and well-placed pauses that give the shivers a chance to manifest before the story is once again plunging on to the good stuff.
Coraline is a story that begs -- no, demands -- to be read aloud. Usually the problem is that someone has to be the reader, while the listeners get to experience the full effect and thrill of the story. Let the author be the reader, and indulge yourself in the sheer delight of hearing a wonderful story told well.

This study shows how divorce--particularly an attendant drop in income, parental involvement, and access to community resources--diminishes children's chances for well-being.

The authors provide answers to other practical questions that many single parents may ask: Does the gender of the child or the custodial parent affect these outcomes? Does having a stepparent, a grandmother, or a nonmarital partner in the household help or hurt? Do children who stay in the same community after divorce fare better? Their data reveal that some of the advantages often associated with being white are really a function of family structure, and that some of the advantages associated with having educated parents evaporate when those parents separate.

In a concluding chapter, McLanahan and Sandefur offer clear recommendations for rethinking our current policies. Covers much real research

Forget all myths you were told, and concentrate on reality.

Here you have a collection of various kinds of experiments and correlations regarding children that grow up with a single mother.

A striking finding claims that children that grow up with single mothers are indeed less successful, but not because they grow up without a father. Just:

1) Genetic heritage. The same genes that cause the parents to divorce have on average some effect on children's personality etc.

2) Socioeconomic status. Single mothers are usually poorer.

3) Lake of stability. Single mothers move from neiborhood to another more often than married couples. This is damaging the children social relationships etc.

There are other interesting finding there.

I am not the last word in "approving" the conclusion. But they look convincing. And one should certainly give them a thought.

There is a lot of value in thinking our assumptions from the beginning, and trying to give up our prejudices.

Mostly statistics, no real advice

Don't be fooled by the title; has nearly nothing for real single dads. The book is full of statistics that could be summarized in a couple of pages for the laymen. Doesn't offer anything about "what hurts, what helps".

About the Author
John White was born in Liverpool, England, on March 5, 1924, and grew up in Manchester. After serving as a reconnaissance photographer in the Fleet Air Arms during World War II, he completed medical training at Manchester University. He later participated in a variety of short-term missions efforts (including Bible smuggling!) and capitalized on many opportunities to encourage Christians behind the Iron Curtain during the beginning of the Cold War.

On June 25, 1955, White married Laureate May O'Hara. From 1955 to 1964 he served as a medical missionary with New Tribes Mission. Later he was appointed associate general secretary of the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students of Latin America.

White emigrated to Canada with his family in 1965 and later completed his residency in psychiatry in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He next filled the post of associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Manitoba and also served locally as pastor of Church of the Way.

He wrote 25 books as well as numerous articles and study guides. A much sought-after speaker, he lectured around the world at churches, conferences and leadership events. During his later life, White moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, helping to plant a Vineyard church there (Surrey Vineyard) and becoming involved in the larger Vineyard Christian Fellowship.

John White died in 2002, but his written ministry lives on, with over 1.5 million of his books in print.

A fresh look at prayer

Much of the current attitude about prayer left me confused and discouraged, leading me to believe that prayer changes God and that I simply need to "pray harder" if I'm struggling. Mr. White's book, however, by looking at prayers recorded in the Bible, reaffirmed that our prayers are an important response to an unchanging God. Rather than taking a flippant view of the struggles behind some of these great prayers, he addressed them honestly and in context with other Scripture. Of course, it is good to have a clear understanding of prayer, but this book has played a role in my walk which has been even more important: it has encouraged me to pray more and more.

A Life-Changing Book

This is, without question, the best book on prayer I have ever read. It has dramatically altered the way I pray, both in terms of what things I pray about, and what I expect from God during the exchange. John White is a masterful writer who does not shy away from pointing out what our personal weaknesses might be in our prayer lives. He speaks truth boldy. While reading this book I often felt convicted and saw the need for a transformation of how I pray. Daring to Draw Near will show how our prayers should be more God-centered than they probably are, and that they should be more focused on prayers for "our people" and our community. We are challenged to be honest in our prayers about who God really is and about who we are and what we think. If you read this book, your prayer life (and the rest of your life) will never be the same.

Studying Prayer By Seeing It With Flesh and Bones

This is my first time reading a book by John White and when my wife recommended it, I decided to give it a read. White's book, Daring To Draw Near (People in Prayer), was written in 1977 and is not so much a book about prayer, but more a study of actual prayers recorded in the scriptures.

He chose ten prayers, eight from the Old Testament and 2 from the New Testament. Several of his choices are familiar prayers from David, Daniel and Hannah, while some of White's choices are less prayer-like than others. White dedicates a chapter to each study and really gleans some amazing truths from each one. He states the following concerning why he chose to write his book in this format:

"This is a book about ten specific prayers recorded in the Bible, not about the topic of prayer. What we have lacked was the insight that comes from eavesdropping on some of the most significant prayers in human history. They are recorded for our learning and I felt they were being neglected."

A view of the chapter headings provides the reader with a snapshot of the content:

ABRAHAM: The Day God Grew Larger

JACOB: A Crippling in the Chasm

MOSES: Shining Faces

DAVID: Fellowship Restored

DANIEL: The Man Who Was Greatly Beloved

HANNAH: Whispers in Pleasure, Shouts in Pain

PAUL: Praying For Others

JESUS: The Last Battle

White does an excellent job in covering a much deeper and wider range of prayer issues. He puts flesh and bones on subjects like our dependency on prayer, revealing the real God in prayer, moving beyond ourselves in prayer, the purpose of pain in prayer, being silent in prayer, praise in prayer, and companionship in prayer, to name just a few. This book should not be read quickly, but very slowly, digesting each section with a goal toward putting these jewels into practice. White very clearly cautions the reader not to just mimic the principles taught, but first allow them to penetrate our hearts until we truly desire to draw near to God as those OT and NT examples in this book did.

Each chapter begins with the full scripture text under study. Having been written over three decades ago, and prior to publication of most of the new translations we commonly use today (NASB, NIV, ESV, NKJV), White uses the Revised Standard Version (RSV) as his text in this book, a common choice among British scholars and authors.

I enjoyed this book and appreciate my wife's recommendation. I found it instructive, insightful, and because of the human element, I related more easily to the prayer principles being taught. If you have read a number of "how-to" books on prayer, pick up Daring to Draw Near (People in Prayer) and take a few steps closer to a life of authentic prayer. Recommended.
