Jack of all trades, master of none. . .
By BookMan
This was a book that I was really looking forward to reading as the topic is not only a fascinating one but can also lead to a lot of fun. Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed with it as it tried to accomplish far too much and quickly lost my attention as it does not really seem to be a book that can be used to "create professional quality music at home" unless you're will to spend enormous amounts of money purchasing the extremely expensive software discussed. Secrets of Recording reads more like a manual for the software applications covered, rather than as an attempt to make home recordings assessable to hobbyists and musicians.
The book is also limited in the types of music covered - there was far too much emphasis on editing drum tracks (which is something that, in my situation, would almost never be concerned with), again using very expensive software while not covering others (acoustic instruments and vocals) sufficiently. This may not be a problem for others, but it is certainly something I noticed.
Overall, this book might be useful to someone who has the specific software applications that are discussed but of limited to no utility to users who want to make good recordings at home using basic techniques.

Tips and tricks from a professional
By Maxwell Edison
Say you want to learn a specific computer program, one with a bit of a learning curve. You'd probably start out with a primer ("App X in Seven Days") and move on to a big overview ("The Complete App X"). Only after you get a grasp of the app would you start to look at "tips and tricks" books written by power users. These tips/tricks books are sometimes invaluable to moderate learners in that they present actual real-world solutions from people who use the app every day. Many readers will know a lot of the material, but they won't know all of it, and getting that one special solution to that one really, really annoying problem is what makes tips/tricks books worth the time and money.
"Secrets of Recording" is a tips/tricks book for recording and post-recording engineers. It isn't a "start here!" book and it isn't a comprehensive, 900-page tome, either. It's a collection of tried-and-true solutions from an actual music engineer. The majority of the tips are not about recording, strictly speaking. Most of the material covers how to deal with various apps in shaping and editing music files post-recording.
If you're serious about picking up some professional sound-engineering tips, this book is great. If you're just someone starting off in the digital recording process, this book will probably be confusing. If you want to know about one specific recording app, you should know this book jumps around between software quite a bit. This could be a drag if you want to know all about the one or two apps you already own; it's not a drag if you're looking at purchasing software and want to see what different apps can accomplish for you.
One more point: Many people prefer to learn something new by getting a highly detailed overview of the topic before jumping in. Others prefer jumping in right away and learning with a more hands-on and seemingly scattered approach. This book is probably going to be liked more by the trial-and-error latter than the big-picture former.
Overall, I'd say this book is good for what it is, one that covers tips and tools. Tether your expectations accordingly and you won't be disappointed.

The Next Best Thing to Watching a Recording Engineer at Work
By Fly By Light
Reviewer: Musician. Worked in numerous home and pro studios (as client). Recorded since 1987, starting with 4 track, now using Sonar. Occasional paid recording gigs.
Author: Grammy and platinum record, Ass't professor @ University of Colorado, Denver
Subject and Depth: real world tips, very specific instruction in certain technical subjects
Audience: Those making their first investment in recording gear, intermediate recordists adept at basics. Emphasis on Pro Tools, but not enough to alienate other platform users.
The Mastering Music series is the latest addition to the rapidly proliferating selection of books on recording. Though auther Lorne Bregitzer has crossed paths with big names, he brings an everyman sensibility to this book. The emphasis is on mistakes that beginners make, and on techniques that will help musicians who have no experience in the studio. Chapter 1 "Creating a Great Recording from the Start" takes me back to when I was about to purchase my first DAW. I spent a week on a project in a Pro Tools facility and asked questions. This chapter answers many of those questions. Chapters 2 (Timing Correction), 3 (Replacing Sounds) and 4 (Pitch Correction) explain concepts behind three of the latest tools and walk the user through sample sessions with some popular tools. Pro Tools users will especially benefit here.
The information in this book is very important and clearly presented. It is not an easy book to sit down and read cover-to-cover because it is so dense. It's more like a text or instructional book, a la Craig Anderton, but more formal, dry presentation. Reading this book too quickly will cause readers to miss little nuggets throughout the book that make ALL THE DIFFERENCE in the quality of your work. Many such nuggets are tucked away in single sentences.
This book does what it attempts to do well, but, to use a recording analogy, it does not feel like it was "mastered". The first chapter is long and dense. It discusses "boardside manner", editing techniques, click tracks, and on and on. It is overwhelming. Chapters 2, 3 4 and 6 give sufficiently thorough discussions in a reasonable amount of space. Chapter 5 (Effects) gives a survey of effects, including a very good discussion of convolution, but some crucial concepts were presented so concisely that I felt short-changed. How does one discuss efffects without talking specifically about non-convolution reverbs? Chapter 7 (Mixing) felt similarly rushed - books are devoted to this subject. Chapter 8 (Mastering) ends on a high note, hitting many concepts but referring beginners to other sources for the details that they may never need or want to know.
On a well-mastered CD, the tracks seem to "fit" together; in this book, the chapters don't. The information presented and the author's sensitivity to beginning recordists get five stars. The pacing and editing knock it down to four.
