Outstanding stories! Very highly recommended

I actually read an advance copy of this book more than two months ago and wrote my review then. I liked it so much that since that time I have read three more of Kelly Cherry's books, three interconnected short story collections that I call the Nina Bryant trilogy. They are: My Life and Dr. Joyce Brothers: A Novel in Stories, The Society of Friends: Stories, and A Kind of Dream: Stories. Like this book, they are all outstanding examples of the art of fiction in general, and the short story in particular. Cherry is an absolute master of the genre. Okay, here's my review of her latest -

TWELVE WOMEN IN A COUNTRY CALLED AMERICA: STORIES, by Kelly Cherry.
Where to begin? Well, I can't remember when I've LOVED a book of short stories quite this much. As any writer knows all too well, short stories are often a very hard sell in the book biz. But these stories, well, they are - ALL of them - just so damn PERfect! They are like tiny twenty-page novels, stories that seem to give you a look at a particular woman's whole life, with all its tears and laughter, sorrows and joys, triumphs and failures. There is simply not a clinker in the whole bunch.

That said, I still don't know where to begin. But here goes. The twelve women featured here are all from the South - ten states: Alabama (twice), Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia (twice). They are ordinary women but each is unique. They are: Plummy, Ramona, France, Jeanne, Georgiana, Carolina, Sheba ('Sassy'), Jessie, Henrietta, Lorna Jo, Calista, and June. They range in age from ten (Jessie - "The Piano Lesson") to nearly ninety (Sassy - "A Life Long and Short"). But these ages remain relative, as you are often granted glimpses of various times in their lives, from childhood to old age. And it is this variety - in personality, age and circumstances - that makes this collection of stories - of lives - so rich and satisfying.

I loved, for example, Sassy, who started out dirt-poor in the depths of the Depression, sleeping three to a mattress with her five younger siblings in Memphis, her hard-working mother always exhausted. But she "grew up to become Miss Sheba Moore, Bachelor of Arts and first-grade teacher," but she still remembers a Christmas when her only gift was a shiny red apple, and "sleeping in her mother's arms that Christmas night. She has never forgotten that even sadness can be a gift if it is shared."

That detail of the apple brought to mind the ever-present orange in the toe of my own Christmas stocking, because my parents (also children of the Great Depression) remembered when an orange - or an apple - was a luxury. And now, nearing ninety, Sassy still misses her mother, remembering how she was always too tired to play with her children.

"If there is a heaven - which Sassy seriously doubts - the first thing she is going to do is look up her mother and take hold of her hand and ask her to dance. Her mother won't have to say she doesn't have time, she has to sweep and iron, mend and clean, she has to work. She'll let her smile grow wide, her dimple flashing, and the two of them will dance all over the pissy place."

I also loved Texan Lorna Jo ("Serious Love"), who knew "how to throw her head back, square her shoulders, and walk like a woman. A fine art, this performance of gender, and presentation was critical ..." A successful professional woman who found love late in life, she "would remember what it was like to have been loved by a man who took love seriously."

And there was Calista ("The Starveling"), a New Orleans ear ring artisan, ignored and emotionally abused by her vain wannabe-poet lover. Finally breaking free, she decides to try writing herself - about what she knows: "fear, grief, anger, loneliness, and fending off despair with work ... [and] self-reliance, adaptability, clarity of purpose, joking and friendship."

In fact, these are all precisely the things that Kelly Cherry writes about in this marvelous jewel box of a book. Writing about what she knows. And every story here is a sparkling gem polished to perfection, and laced throughout with a sneakily sly, self-effacing sense of humor that will leave you chuckling, or even laughing aloud. I'll say it again: I LOVED these stories!

Who IS this woman anyway? And why have I never heard of her? Especially considering she is a former poet laureate of Virginia and has written more than two dozen books of fiction, poetry, essays and even a couple translations of Greek plays. I mean this is obviously a wonderfully accomplished and skilled writer at the top of her game. And now that she's finally on my radar, I will definitely be reading more of Kelly Cherry's work.

One more time: LOVED these stories; LOVED this book. Handing it off to my wife now. Very highly recommended.

Great Read by Leslie Langtry

If you love a good mystery with "laugh out loud" dialog then this is the book for you. Merry Wrath is former CIA agent who is hiding out in a small southern town from the enemies who want to kill her. She is a strong female lead and is able to handle the trouble that finds her. She gets involved as a girl scout leader, who was never in the girl scouts, and the girls end up learning things that are not scout approved - too funny! The other characters fit so well into the story that you can't help but be involved in the story and their lives. This is the sequel to "Merit Badge Murders" and I loved that one as well and would recommend you read that one first if possible. I eagerly waited for "Mint Cookie Murder" to became available to rejoin Merry and her friends. Now that I have read this second book, I sure hope a third one is planned. Great story line, great characters, and a mystery mixed with humor - a great bargain at the price!!

Fun, Fun!!

I loved Mint Cookie Murder. Such a fun story, fast-paced with likable characters. And laugh out loud funny, especially Philby, the obese Hitler lookalike cat who hissed every time anyone said the villain's name. I LOVE Philby. Merry is fun and self-deprecating. I love the Girl Scout troop, a group of assassins-in-training. It's a fast read and I couldn't put it down once I started. The mystery was good and held my interest. I wish there had been more physical descriptions of the characters. We know Merry has short curly blonde hair. I don't remember reading a description of Kelly. We get a description of Riley, but not so much Rex. Not every reader agrees with me, but I like detailed physical descriptions of the characters. This didn't detract from the story though. Loved it and will buy the first one so I can revisit these characters.

A Delicious Read!

These books are just so much fun! They have great characters, engaging plots, adventure, and a full cookie jar of laughs. Merry is such a great character and I have come to love her outlook on life and how she deals with daily issues. This is one of those books to enjoy at the park, the beach, or tucked away in a cozy corner, anywhere you can just sit back and enjoy an afternoon escape from your own life. I highly recommend this book, and even though it is part of a series you don't necessarily need to read the first one to enjoy this one, although I would suggest the first one, for it is every bit as fun as this one. For a summer day dedicated to indulging yourself, you can't go wrong with this book...just be sure to have some cookies close by!

great basic introduction to virtue ethics

Dr. Wadell's book is a terrific introduction to the positive, life affirming topic of Christian virtue ethics. Read this book if you really want to know how even despite sin and human weakness, God's love for us all transends the sorrows of the world. His explanations are beautifully crafted and his voice is one that brings hope to those who struggle with living the good life well. Wonderful text for beginning students of a positive, affirming view of Christian ethics. A breath of fresh air in the dankness of the usual sin, damnation, and "thou-shall-nots" of many Christian ethics texts. Bravo, Dr. Wadell, your book is full of joy!

Grade 8–10—Rosemary Goode doesn't have a carefree life; being an overweight binge eater makes her self-conscious around other teens, and her Aunt Mary's constant criticizing doesn't help matters. Rosemary works at her mother's salon, where she sees the beautiful and popular girls getting primped for dances. Her single mother tries to help her, buying a treadmill (on which Rosemary hangs clothes) and arranging for therapy sessions. Rosemary's friendship with a fitness-obsessed, friendly new girl improves her outlook on exercise, and a budding relationship with Kyle, a popular athlete at school, confuses and exhilarates her. Her mother's cancer diagnosis shocks and unnerves her, but the teen and her mom deal with the situation with realism and honesty. Rosemary is a funny, sharp, and appealing narrator; Supplee has good insight into high school life, especially cliques, and teenage body issues. Cancer and obesity are handled with humor, care, and sensitivity. Southern euphemisms and speech are sprinkled throughout the novel, which takes place in a small town in Tennessee, but not to excess. Glorifies eating disorders

This book was well-written and the main character was certainly one the reader can sympathize with, but this book seems to follow a basic outline of "fat girl develops eating disorder, people congratulate her for losing weight in an unhealthy way, finally gets what she wants [popular friend, boyfriend] because she lost weight" and completely glosses over the real - devastating - impacts of eating disorders. It makes it seem like she chose to use disordered eating as a "diet", and the book barely mentions any of the mental and negative physical effects of eating disorders. No one questions her habits, only congratulates her for losing weight. I get that when an overweight person loses weight, people tend to see it as a good/healthy thing and only question the methods when an already 'normal-sized' or thin person loses weight, but there really could have been a better critique of this tendency.

Rosemary Goode is smart, funny, and sassy, but no one seems to notice. All anyone sees is her weight - all 200 pounds of it. She doesn't fit in at school, she finds herself getting made fun of by the popular Bluebirds, and the only boyfriend she'll ever have is Mr. Hershey, or Mr. M&M.

At the start of a new year, Rosemary finds herself disappointed. Santa just brought her an unwanted treadmill for Christmas and her Aunt Mary gave her tickets to a "Healing the Fat Girl Within" Conference. On top of that, Rosemary's mother has sneakily set up counseling sessions for weight loss.

After a meltdown at her mother's gossipy salon, Rosemary decides she is going to lose the weight - on her terms. Rosemary tries various methods to lose weight, but it's a slow process. When Rosemary's mother is diagnosed with cancer, the distance between them grows even more and Rosemary tries to keep from turning back to food. Things start to look up when Kyle Cox, the school's newest football star, starts to take a notice in Rosemary. But how can popular, good-looking Kyle ever like a girl like Rosemary? And how will Rosemary bridge the ever-growing gap between her and her mother?

ARTICHOKE'S HEART is one of those books I wanted to stay in bed on a rainy day with and never stop reading. The cover and storyline may make you think this is light chick-lit, but the plot digs much deeper and carries a wide range of emotions that are great for any mood.

Rosemary is a fantastic character and her growth throughout the book is realistic. I was cheering her on the whole way through and felt as though I was on the journey with her. I also have to admit I had a bit of a crush on Kyle while reading this book! Author Suzanne Supplee put so much into her characters; they felt real and I didn't want to leave them. The Southern setting added an extra dose of charm to the story. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author in the future!

Confused no more

I have had alot of mixed feelings over the years about the loss of my foreskin. At times I was mad at my parents for doing this to me. I saw my dad in the shower once, and he was uncut. Ohh how I wanted to touch it feel it and experience it as god intended. This book has helped me come to terms with what was done to me. I am taking steps to restore my foreskin. This is sometimes painful but well worth it. My "friend" is supporting of my endeavor and is stretching his skin too. Maybe in a couple years we will have almost complete skins. All our friends in the lifestyle will be jealous. I havent tried to hurt myself or anything but I understand why someone may. This book has opened my eyes and give me the courage to confront my disability.

Well worth a read

WARNING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT. This book is very educational. It gives a history of circumcision that is very informative. For example: ancient circumcision was different from modern circumcision. Originally only the very tip of the foreskin was removed NOT most or all of it as is now done. It IS possible to regrow your foreskin BUT it will not be exactly like your original foreskin. Though sex WILL be better. Read the book. You will enjoy it.
