Breeding contempt?

Reading this book is like joining a seemingly cordial discussion, but as you listen more, you realize you are in the middle of a feud. The long-standing point of contention in this book is the importance of the contribution of the most well-known of animal breeders, Robert Bakewell. Although not addressed directly, there are jibes sprinkled throughout which suggest that Bakewell's contributions were over-rated, and these passages are peculiar, given the book's otherwise neutral, dissertation-like tone. However this quirk does not distract from the other information, which covers animal breeding (horse, cattle and sheep) in England from the earliest part of the written record, say 1500 or so, to the late 1700s. Several ideas of these early breeders were highlighted; first, they thought that imported animals would lose their special qualities after they became acclimatized to the local weather and soil, and so refreshing of stock from outside was viewed as important. Apparently there was no understanding that cross-breeding imported lines with existing ones would change the imported breed's genotype over time. The second idea is that animals were created by God, and were perfect at that time, and any ensuing problems were the result of deterioration due to imperfect human husbandry. This idea is in contrast to those of improvement of species to new summits through selective breeding, an idea which emerged toward the end of the 1700s. Heavy on detail and light on analysis, this book is suited to those with specific questions about the topic.

Very interesting, you should read it.

The layout of this book is much better than what I found in other books of this series. No figures are missing or on the wrong place this time. In general the text is clear but still there are some ambiguous paragraphs that lead to confusion. The most disturbing is about MAP and manifold vacuum. Although the author is frequently drawing attention on this, he increases this confusion. Indeed, MAP stands for Manifold Absolute Pressure and by definition it should not be differential.
Nevertheless, I strongly recommend the reading of this ebook.

Eldorado Red was a great read. I now understand why Donald Goines has been the most prolific black author in American history. The author has a way of hooking you in from the first paragraph! I look forward to reading more of his books.

My 2nd Goines book..so far loving them

Pretty good book. The 1st one I read was dopefiend and I thought that book was "da bomb"..The story was depicted through actual experience. As for El Dorado Red I thought this book was great, made me almost wish there was a movie to go along with it, great suspense, realness and action. The only thing was that it could of been a little longer, but hey! still a great book...check them out

First trial

This book was very,very good to me! This is my first time reading a Donald Goines novel( that's why the review is titled first trial), and I was pleased with the results! This book kept me wondering what was going to happen next. The fistfights, were interesting and I kept reading because I kept wanting to see what was going to happen. The characters were pretty realistic and the plot was great. A son robs his own father's number's house with friends and things the story gets better after that. The ending was alright, not to bad. I also appreciated the armed robbery parts. Those were suspenseful! The book is worth buying and I'm looking for more of his works! It was close to 5 stars!

Hot, sweet, totally addictive

Just like the delicious recipes described in this sexy little novella, the writing by Kimberly Kincaid is down to earth and comfortable, but oh so yummy! Far from the over done sappy fluff of a lot of romance writers, this reads so much more witty and real. I'm new to the foodie genre, but I'm loving it. The sensory mix of food and sex is a no-brainer, and Kimberly Kincaid has absolutely nailed it!! I can't wait to read her next offerings!

Great sexy short read

This novella is a great sexy short read. Violet sees food in vivid imagery, she is focused but has a relaxed demeanor. Noah is matched in his intensity and focus as a cop. It maks their heat even better! A must read. I can't wait for more from Kimberly Kincaid!!

The author did an amazing job in describing Violet's light bulb moment.

The brother's best friend trope is one of my favorites. This book was a pretty good example of that, not only were they friends, they were partners on the police force. I imagine that would make it that much harder, not to mention the fact that the heroine didn't want a relationship with a cop. Violet's father was killed while on duty.

The author did an amazing job in describing Violet's light bulb moment. I don't believe I could ever give up on the love of my life because of his job, no matter how dangerous. She knew he was a cop when they started spending time together, it's not like he hid it from her. Ms. Kincaid fed the characters emotions, Violet's fears and Noah's anticipation into the book seamlessly. I can't wait to read more from this author. I hope she gives Jason, Violet's brother his own story.

One thing I noticed about this story is there wasn't many secondary characters, in fact there was only one, the brother/partner. I usually love secondary characters so I didn't think I would like this book, but I was so focused on the hero and heroine's emotions and what they were going thru that I didn't even notice.

Dan and Raymond are the same age; they spend time sparring to see who has the greater wit or the lesser maturity, as they reluctantly discover that they have much in common. Younger Kim, an enthusiastic, knowledgeable camper, is also smart enough to call her brother's bluff without rubbing it in. Mike is the cheerful leader; aside from wanting the trip to go well he relaxes enough to do his share of the teasing. There is plenty of well-paced and sometimes very funny dialogue. Well Written and Informative Commentary

This book was the required text for a college course I took for studying the life and teachings of Christ. The first 200 pages of his book are dedicated to introducing the reader to the setting, customs, times, and background of the land where Jesus lived and people he interacted with. While agreement with all the points made by Foster is left to the interpretation of the reader, he is exceedingly thorough in his research and commentary, as is shown by the sheer number of pages the book contains. His explanations do not leave the reader wanting for more as he covers in detail a wide range of topics that the reader may not have even considered. His style of writing makes an easy read of the nearly 1,400 page book. As a Biblical Studies major, Christian, researcher, and just an inquisitive reader, this is one book I am happy to add to my small collection of great Biblical commentary books.

This is a great commentary that covers just what you'd think it would. It also contains solid refutation of a number of false notions out their about the origins of the gospel message. When I first stumbled on the work of Robert Tuttle Morris I had no idea that behind the name was a larger-than-life figure; certainly I had not counted on finding a Renaissance man, nor then did I have the slightest inkling of any relationship between our families. It was some years before I fully understood that he was a renowned pioneer of modern surgery who managed to squeeze into a crowded life a passion for hunting, nature conservation, exploration, horticulture, writing, and poetry. Since many of his accomplishments matched my interests I became drawn into his story, and eventually to this publication project with his late daughter and granddaughter, Dr. Pam Walker. 

Biography of Dr. Morris
Robert Morris was an eminent surgeon as well as a noted naturalist, explorer, and horticulturist. He was an inquisitive man who wrote about a wide range of subjects and even published poetry. This well-rounded life began in Seymour, Connecticut, in 1857 as the eldest child of Luzon Burritt Morris, a lawyer and sometime Governor of Connecticut, and Eugenia Laura Tuttle Morris, a well-known author. He received a broad education including the classics at Hopkins Grammar School in New Haven. Boyhood interests in wildlife and hunting led him to study biology at Cornell University, but instead of following a natural aptitude for science he enrolled in medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, graduating M.D. in 1882. A scientific outlook was conveyed into his career, which was unusual for surgeons in those days. 
His working life spanned enormous changes in medicine, technology, and society, for which he was a sharp observer. Early on he visited the great medical centers in Germany and France, and in England a meeting with Joseph Lister had a lasting impact. Morris became one of the first doctors in America to practice aseptic or "Listerian" surgery, and introduced many surgical innovations. As he grew in experience and confidence he was often critical of conventional practices and became regarded as a radical, yet in demand from patients and many of his ideas eventually gained grudging acceptance from the profession.  He poked fun at the "ghastly gash", as he characterized the typical incisions made by surgeons in the late Victorian era, and ridiculed stuffing of the body cavity with gauze as "taxidermy". He believed "the patient is on the whole his own best antiseptic" and that less invasive procedures are often more beneficial. He was famous for his "inch-and-a-half incision with a week-and-a-half confinement", and minimal instruments for appendectomies, one of his specialties. 
Morris had a formidable gift of language which he used to censure quacks, posers, and faddists. Fearless of criticism, he welcomed vigorous debate as the grand avenue for progress. Nevertheless, speaking his mind did not obstruct the path to high office in his profession. He was a professor of surgery for over twenty years at the New York Post Graduate Medical College, and served as the President of the American Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists from 1907, and of the American Therapeutic Association from 1916. 
Morris married his first wife, Aimée Reynaud Mazergue, in 1898; they had a daughter, Eugenia Reynaud Morris Frost.  After their divorce, he married Mary Hannah Best in 1922, and late in his life they had a daughter, Mary Morris. She remembered him as a tender family man who was beloved by friends, colleagues, and patients. 
He retired to his 440 acre wooded estate near Stamford which he preserved as a wildlife sanctuary, much of which is enjoyed today by the public as the Mianus River Park. With a dynamic career and exploration of the wilds of Canada behind him, he threw himself into experimental horticulture and writing about medicine, public affairs, conservation, and growing nut trees. The last of his ten books, Fifty Years a Surgeon, was an instant success. 

He lived for another ten years, but infirmity robbed him of the energy that had formerly animated a productive life. Dr. Morris died at Stamford Hospital on January 9, 1945 at the age of 87.

A Truly Enlightened Man

Robert Morris's story is that of a scientist, humanist, and nature lover. His sense of honor, along with his sense of humor, shines through on each page of this highly entertaining and informative book.

I hardly expected to be enthralled by the life story of one of America's earliest and most influential surgeons, but was interested in the history of the period as seen through the eyes of this respected professional. In no time at all, I found myself highlighting numerous comments and making a stack of margin notes along with them. No matter how well written a book may be, I personally only give five stars if it is a book that I want to keep for future retreading or one that I would highly recommend to similar readers. This book fits both categories.

Chapter 20, "The Red Gods" is alone worth the price of the book for anyone who loves and appreciates their natural surroundings. Dr. Morris's humanity, kindness, sincerity and love of nature are expressed in beautiful prose with each sentence touching the mind or the heart.

The book is carefully edited and includes illustrations and meticulous and informative endnotes. Altogether an enjoyable, entertaining, and educational read.

Wonderful story.loved it.

This is less an autobiography and more an interesting and true story about the beginning of modern medicine written by a man who was there at the forefront and helped to shape it. Robert T. Morris, surgeon, was also a naturalist and and much more. He clearly had the heart of a poet. His book is wonderfully easy and delightful to read, and he is amazingly un-egotistical; many with his accomplishments would be. So much of what he discusses is still relevant today and, in many ways, he was clearly a man ahead of his time.
I confess that I originally only picked this up bc his grand-daughter (and part author) is a friend of mine. I'm so glad I did. Can't tell you how many pages I bookmarked to be able to refer back to, nor how many quotes I chose to copy and keep. This is very worth of a read.

Rocky IV: The Director's Cut

If you're reading this right now, you probably have already seen the movie Rocky IV. So I won't waste time telling you the plot of this book since it's exactly the same as the film it's based on.

Having typed that, this book is a must have for any Rocky fan. It is really cool getting to see something new in the Rocky universe. There are a lot of extended scenes and dialogues that fills gaps.

To give an example, in the book, you'll read about Apollo and Rocky talking together after sparing in the beginning of the book, and Apollo giving Rocky the hat we later see him wear in the movie. There's also some good romantic scenes between Rocky and Adrian, as well as some hilarious dialogue between Paulie and the robot. We also are treated to reading about Rocky's training with Apollo Creed in Las Vegas, and all about how the two go jogging on the Vegas Strip. After seeing Apollo train Rocky in Rocky III, it's cool getting to read about how the roles were reversed this time.

Also - in this book, when it's Rocky's turn to face Drago in the ring, and he starts training, Rocky originally tries to train in his old gym in South Philadelphia, but due to being bothered by so many fans and the media, he decides Russia is the best place for him to train so he can be undisturbed. There's all sorts of things like that in the book that I really enjoyed reading. You learn so much about the characters and the events.

The way the author describes places and people is wonderful. If you have a good imagination, you'll be able to see the scenes very clearly, and be right there with Rocky in Las Vegas or Russia.

What I like about the book besides all the extra stuff is that we are able to go inside the character's heads and see what they are thinking. As I was reading about Apollo Creed in this book, and all his thoughts and feelings on why needed to come back to boxing, it reminded me a little of how Rocky was in the sixth Rocky film. It made me really sympathize with Apollo, and I cheered for him all the more in my head when he competed against Ivan Drago.

Speaking of Ivan Drago, this book humanizes him, and we learn that he is not only a husband, but a father as well who had to work very hard to get where he is. He's still presented in the book the same way he was in the film, but you're able to travel into his brain and have a much better understanding of him and can sympathize with him. You'll learn his history as well.

This book is like a director's cut of Rocky IV. It takes you right into the world of Rocky and many other characters, and doesn't look back. You see everything told from many different perspectives. It is extremely detailed, and is exactly what a book should be. This is very easy to read, and is a lot of fun.

Reading this book can help one understand the character's choices and words much better. Truly, there are no good or bad guys in this story - Just people doing what they think is right.

Saner Perspective from the Original Script Writer

Novelization of the fourth Rocky film is an enjoyable read indeed. It gives saner perspective from the script writer Stallone while the film was misunderstood as some sort of anti-Russian propaganda. It is faithful to movie script and not so much original development there. Training scene in remote place in Russia is good as well, though the training method is no so much convincing as that of Karate Kid series. It seems as the series go on it is getting harder and harder for Rocky to concentrate apart from media attention. It is more like Rambo in first blood part 2.

Verdict: Saner, and more realistic description except training scenes.
Rating: 70 out of 100
Recommended for: Die-hard Stallone fans.
