For Those Starting on the Path

After two years of hard work, Father Anthony Silvia + brings to us an amazing primer in Johannite spirituality in his Sanctuary of the Sacred Flame bringing to light the foundational practices of the Apostolic Johannite Church for all to see including the Logos Liturgy and the ceremony of the Agape Feast.

The Apostolic Johannite Church is a world-wide network of communities united by the pursuit of gnosis and the communal celebration of the Divine. In Sanctuary of the Sacred Flame, Father "Tony" explains the significance of the central spiritual practices of the AJC after many years of personal practice, explores traditional devotionals in an applicable and approachable way, all the while maintaining his own sincere sense of humility and humor.

This text, following six years on the heels of Monsignor Jordan Stratford's+ Living Gnosticism and three years on the heels of Father Donald Donato's+ dutiful translation of The Levitikon: the Gospels According to the Primitive Church, is a foundational text for anyone looking to begin their own personal practice in the tradition of the disciples of the Divine Beloved and includes practices innovated by members of this community in the modern age.

Sanctuary of the Sacred Flame is sure to be a text I will myself refer to in the future as I undergo the seminary program toward priesthood in the AJC and am proud to suggest to anyone looking for a change of pace in their spiritual practices. My only complaint is that it is a little light on 'in depth' philosophy, but it makes up for it in the depth of experience of all the practitioners whose work contributed to the creation of such an amazing text.

Great book for those interested in the Johnannite Tradition.

I have been interested in the AJC and the Gnostic path for years. When I first looked at the AJC there were no groups or Parishes in my area so I figured I would look for other organizations to belong too and learn from. I decided to check out the AJC site again and found this book written by Fr Anthony Silvia. I became acquainted with Fr. Silvia through GnosticNYC, they put out great videos on Youtube and have a Gnostic show once a week. Great stuff.

This book has helped me get back into a more spiritual life. Thanks Fr. Anthony for all you do with the AJC, and for writing such a great book.

For those interested in learning more about the AJC's practices I highly recommend this book, it is easy to read, and fun.

This is a fantastic book that outlines the modern Gnostic practice. In particular, it offers a good glance into the community of worship found within the Apostolic Gnostic Church. About the Author
Angela J. Hattery, PhD holds the Zachary T. Smith Reynolds Associate Professorship in Sociology and Women & Gender Studies at Wake Forest University. She completed her B.A. at Carleton College and her M.S. and PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before joining the faculty of Wake Forest in 1998. Her research focuses on social stratification, gender, family, and race. She is the author of numerous articles, book chapters, and books, including another Sage book: Women, Work, and Family: Balancing and Weaving (2001). Her forthcoming book Violence in Intimate Partner Relationships will appear in 2007.

Good Book

I use this book for a class called African American Families. This book contains the most recent data. All other data I could locate was at least 10 years old, and like life things change in 10 years. This book is post 9/11 and post Katrina which both incidents have drastically impacted the Black Family.

I purchased this book for both my class and as one reference for a chapter I am writing. Her scholarship is very detailed, up to date, pensive, and objectively written. In my opinion this is the best current text on the African American Family available. Highly recommended for a course on the African American family.

The stories told and the information provided was both helpful and enlightening. I would urge all to read this;both African-American and white. Great ideas!

I collect both vintage and off-the-shelf jars, which we use for all sorts of things — including some fun crafts. This is a high-quality book with lovely photography, clever layout, and a high quality binding and it includes a history of Mason jars. As someone involved in entertaining for several years now, we are using Mason jars for made-in-advance salads (see Salad & Dressing To-Go Jar, page 94) , with a layered look that everyone enjoys. But I wanted to decorate with some Mason jars for parties, too, and found some great ideas here. I love the Glamorous Place Setting Favor in a little Mason jar to take home, and the candlelit Moroccan Lanterns — with metallic lace doilies on the side — are nice, too.

In another royal exposé, Farquhar, a writer at the Washington Post, duplicates some of the ground covered in Karl Shaw's Royal Babylon, such as Peter the Great's delight in administering torture (he had his son lashed to death) and the way Britain's Queen Mary cajoled her subjects into giving her their household treasures ("I am caressing it with my eyes," she would coyly coo). Written in a provocative tabloid style (with headings like "We Are Not Abused. We Are Abusive," "A Son Should Love His Mother, But..." and "All the Holiness Money Can Buy"), Farquhar publicly washes the dirty laundry of not only European royalty, but also of Roman emperors and popes. Murderers and torturers who slept with their siblings (and other relatives), the emperors of Rome excelled at corruption. The maniacal pedophile Tiberius Caesar (A.D. 14-37) left the corpses of his many victims to rot on the Gemonian Steps, which descended from the Capitol to the Forum, or alternatively enjoyed watching them being thrown from a cliff ("A contingent of soldiers was stationed below to whack them with oars and boat hooks just in case the fall failed to do the trick"). Many popes were no better. Not content with just rooting out Christian heretics by launching a bloody crusade against the Cathars in southern France, Innocent III (1160-1216) declared himself ruler of the world. He sacked Constantinople and massacred every Muslim he could find. Like Royal Babylon, this gossipy string of anecdotes is a popularized rather than an authoritative history and perfect for travel reading.

Great fun!

The subject is a bit shallow, perhaps, but Farquahar's writing is hilarious and you must admit, it's fun. His stories are well researched and accurate portrayals of some shocking, dirty, horrendous, and often VERY funny escapades in the lives of prominent European rulers down through the centuries. If you're not into European history, you'll read it quickly, enjoy the ride, and accidentally learn a lot along the way. If you are, you'll love the refreshingly funny writing style and unique focus (they don't tell you THAT in textbooks!), and you'll appreciate the detailed geneologies in the front and chronologies in the back that are an inestimable help in keeping straight the tangled branches of Europe's royal family trees.

Lots of fun for royal watchers

Michael Farquhar's "A Treasury of Royal Scandals" will delight inveterate royal watchers! As he sniffs in the introduction, he covers not the current crop of royals, as none of them have provided anything worthy of the title of "scandalous," but he goes in-depth to provide us with (as the book is subtitled) "shocking true stories of history's wickedest, weirdest, most wanton kings, queens, tsars, popes, and emperors."
Farquhar provides a handy family tree for major royal families at the beginning--it's most helpful when the scandals reach a dizzying pitch and you need to sort out which royal is plotting to overthrow/marry for money/murder which other royal. He debunks an awful lot of incorrect gossip (like the oft-told tale of Catherine the Great's predilection for beastiality) and comes up with wonderful gems of dirt that will be deliciously unfamiliar to most readers. This is not a scholarly work by any means--it's kind of like a historical PEOPLE magazine, focusing on the faux pas, the foibles, and the fevered doings of all sorts of royals throughout history. Great good fun!

I loved this book!

As an avid European history buff, I enjoy reading about the "nasty little secrets" that weave in & out of history. This book certainly lived up to my expectation and more. I found it as a CD book in my local library and thoroughly enjoyed having it read to me. I had to buy the book. If you are at all familiar with European royalty in the 16th thru 20th (yes 20th! remember Edward the 8th and Wallis Simpson?) centuries then you will enjoy this book. I discovered that even though I was aware of the scandals covering about 3/4ths of this book, it was genuinely enjoyable to listen and then read about them in such a light and comical style.

In this substantially revised updating of his The Social Face of Buddhism (1989), Jones argues that Buddhism has powerful, practical implications for profound social change. He calls this model "engaged Buddhism," which is characterized by "caring and service, social and environmental protest and analysis, nonviolence as a creative way of overcoming conflict, and ... similar initiatives toward a socially just and ecologically sustainable society." He begins by discussing some key Buddhist tenets vis-à-vis engaged Buddhism, including the first noble truth: dukkha, an "existential suffering and gnawing sense of lack." Next, he probes the confluence of Buddhism and various social theories, underlining his root belief that meaningful social change is possible only if there is first a widespread and deep spiritual change in individuals, manifesting in a "culture of awakening." Jones then explores specific issues important to engaged Buddhism, such as structural forms of violence, consumerism, the pitfalls of a growth economy and the transnational corporations that reinforce it, and the destruction of the world's ecology. Finally, he reviews various engaged Buddhism movements across the world. This is less a galvanizing call to action and more a meticulous, multi-disciplinary (Buddhist) philosophical foundation for compassionate social action, for Jones's chief strength-his thoroughness-is also his biggest drawback: the writing is dense, and his larger arguments tend to become bogged down in minutiae. About the Author
Ken Jones was a Zen and Ch’an practitioner and teacher. His career was mainly in higher education, with most of his spare time spent as a peace, ecology and social justice activist, as well as a period on the Samaritans’ telephone helpline. He was a founder of the UK Network of Engaged Buddhists, eventually serving as its president, and a member of the International Advisory Committee of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship Jones facilitated numerous workshops and retreats on different aspects of Buddhism, but focusing particularly on “Everyday Buddhism”. He published widely, his best known book being The New Social Face of Buddhism. A widely published haiku poet, he has been awarded the Sasakawa prize for his contribution in that field. He final years were spent in his native Wales, with his Irish wife Noragh. He passed away in 2015.

Fantastic Treatise

Jones's treatise of the sometimes contentious subject of socially engaged buddhism is well-researched and constructed. This is a great book for experienced practitioners as well as beginners. I highly recommend this book any buddhist or socially concerned individual.

a Buddhist social theory

As Jones notes, traditional Buddhist teachings tend to lack much in the way of social teachings other than basic injunctions to kings on how to rule justly. This has much to do with the social and historical context in which Buddhism originated, where there wasn't really any traditional of social theory (though Buddhism did develop highly complex psychological theories). In this day and age of major social crises, Jones argues we can no longer afford to pay attention to the ethical implications of our actions only for that group of people we meet face-to-face--we must consider the ethical implications of our actions for the whole world. He discusses some of the history of socially engaged Buddhism in Asia and the West, then sets out to develop his own Buddhist social theory.

He notes that engaged Buddhism comes in many varieties, from emphasizing bringing meditation practice into daily life, to social service work, to political activism. It tends to be this last that gets the least emphasis among socially engaged Buddhists, especially in the West, and it is an activist Buddhism that Jones focuses on. He does not try to argue for it from traditional texts, as some have done, but to take the basic Buddhist existential teachings--the four noble truths, the noble eightfold path, no-self, etc.--and use them to understand our current social situation in what he calls a socioexistential approach. He is critical of thos Buddhist social theories that simply try to take Buddhist psychological theories and somehow turn them into social theories, such as calling capitalism institutionalized greed. Social structure can not be understood using just psychological theories. Instead, Jones synthesizes traditional Buddhist psychology with phenomonological sociology. (If this sounds intimidating, don't worry--Jones presents it in a way that is quite clear.) He describes how we have inherited past social forms, which we recreate every generation as we continue to accept them. These social forms take on a life of their own and shape the psychology of their members--which means some societies, such as capitalist and totalitarian ones, tend to cultivate more mental defilements in their members than others. Because society is ultimately something we create and recreate though, we can change it.

I agree with Jones up to here. It's after this that I start to disagree with some of his points. He is critical of what he calls the social fallacy that you can find in much modern social theory, such as some forms of Marxism, which sets up society over the individual and argues that individual consciousness is entirely shaped by social structures. While I agree with this critique, Jones falls into the opposite trap of asserting the primacy of the psychological over the social, instead of seeing them as equally important and interacting dialectically. From here, this leads him to argue that, while political activism (in the Gandhian tradition of militant but loving nonviolence) is important, ultimately spiritual transformation is more important. We need to work on creating a culture of awakening that will cultivate the mental conditions for everyone to awaken. Creating such a culture is important, but I would lay equal stress on transforming social structures. Finally, I think it's a bit naive to expect everyone to be interested in spiritual transformation. While everyone has the capacity for it, there will always be many people who will have no interest in it, at least in this lifetime--which makes Jones' program for stopping social injustice through a culture in which everyone is awakened unrealistic. Certainly we can work for a just society which encourages people to engage in spiritual practice, but it must be one that rests on the frailties of ordinary human beings, not the virtues of awakened bodhissatvas.

Mediocre, it could be better

This is a good book. It's clear and concise and really helps students learn. However, I got this book from my local bookstore for a dollar less than what you're advertising it for and I didn't have to pay credit card and/or shipping and handling fees. The book is good, but the price is not.
