Emanations is a tough series to categorize.
Fantasy? Yes, but not entirely comfortably. You might find things that drink blood, but there are no vampires. You'll certainly find things that change shape, yet there are no werewolves. A number of the characters have been called gods or fae or demons or monsters, in their day, but are they really those things? Magic -- there's plenty of that ... if it is, in fact, magic. The practioners reject that label.
If fantasy, is it epic? Urban? Paranormal romance? Our main character spends time in New York City, but she's from small-town Wisconsin. And much of the other world ranges from pre-industrial to wilderness. The fate of the world is in question, and people ride horses, but we're a long way from something like Tolkien. Our main character would like not to be alone, sure, but romance is not the driving theme.
Science-fiction? Perhaps. The series has elements of alternate history and parallel worlds, and its brand of "magic" shades more toward particle physics, wormholes, and cosmological holography than Macbeth's three witches chanting around their cauldron. People tend to use guns, not swords. Evolution plays a major role. I spend a lot of time researching dinosaurs. But there are no spaceships, no androids, no AIs, no ETs. Not exactly.
Sometimes I think of the series as "science fantasy" or "hard fantasy." Those terms are okay, but the first is dated and the second little known. I guess, in the end, I'll just throw my hands up, call the books "fantasy," and cross my fingers that the tent is big enough for something a little bit strange.
If you give the series a try, I hope you enjoy it -- oddness and all. :)

Magnificent follow-up to Nolander. The best, yet, in the series.

This is a beautiful follow-up to Nolander. As one of the beta readers for this series, I was privileged to see all the versions, and how they changed under Ms. Mills' hand.
This is, essentially, a book about a quest. Beth Ryder, the primary character from Nolander, is sent on this journey, without her honest consent, and cast into very dangerous waters. The journey takes the better part of a year, and stretches across many strata (the term Mills uses to describe parallel worlds on different planes of existence) and forces Beth to confront her deepest fears and longings while finding herself in desperate situations.
We already know that she is a powerful being, only nominally human, but learn so much more about her. The lovely aspect of this is that we discover these qualities at the same time that Beth does. She is, in so many ways, just a normal girl. But, she is a girl who slowly comes to understand her real nature, and the implications for herself and the rest of the world.
She develops from a girl who suffers from panic attacks at unpredictable times, to a being with powers beyond her comprehension. Her growth is so necessary and complete, and the changes she undergoes are so overwhelming that the reader comes to feel the alien presence as common.
As we saw in Nolander, Mills is exceptionally talented at creating worlds, and this book took that talent to new heights. The creatures and different strata were impeccably described. Mills has an unusual gift for painting a picture of a new world, and you cannot help but feeling as though you are physically there and seeing it through your own eyes. I've never read descriptions of dragons before that rival the ones in this book. The book is worth reading for the breathtaking scenes of dragons, alone.
Ghosteater, her stunning elder beast, the giant wolf who has lived a million or so years, is back, and Mills has created a depth of character for that creature which will make you believe that he is out there. She explores the bond between Beth and Ghosteater on a wholly new level. Mills has an uncanny ability to "speak" as a creature who has no use for human language, and no reason to communicate with humans. He has, however, developed a bond with Beth, and this bond is changing him in dramatic ways.
The book begins and ends with Ghosteater. His observations give us a great insight into what will happen, and what has happened. Those scenes remind me of the scene at the opening of 2001, A Space Odyssey. Utterly alien, and yet familiar. His continuing narrative, spread throughout the book, is captivating. Mills has created a wholly alien being with whom the reader can identify.
Williams, the bogeyman from Nolander, is also back, and has become something more. We learn things about him that create a new understanding about his nature, as we watch him turning into counselor, protector, guide, and refuge on this journey. Because of Beth, he has experienced things he never would have, otherwise. He has interacted with a dragon, fought another dragon, communicated with a true elder beast, and learned things from him that he could not have learned anywhere else. He has learned about "the Eye of the Heavens". He has watched as Beth has used her powers and controlled them. She has saved his life. There is no doubt that he has changed his opinion of her, and that she has become someone of value to him. There is a short chapter, at the end of the book, which gives us a glimpse into his mind, which I found totally fascinating. It is a subtle chapter, and you must read it carefully to understand it.
We also see Lord Cordus, probably at his worst. In this book, he has likely crushed any possibility he ever had of creating an ally of her, although she has not given up on him. I can't wait for the next book, where he will undoubtedly have to face the consequences of what he has done. No spoilers here.
This is a book you can read and reread. The first time, read it for excitement. Then, read it for the pleasure of putting everything together. Mills is very sparing with explanations of what, where, when and why. It is important to read carefully. Even skipping one sentence can result in your not understanding fully what is taking place. She is a very subtle writer. I found myself reading and rereading often, just for the pure pleasure of listening to her words. She has a way with words that is spectacular.
She also has the rare talent of being able to write in a man's voice as believably as a woman's. Her male characters sound like men, and not just women masquerading as men. She seemingly knows how men think, and it is NOT how women think. Very few writers can pull this off well. I never found myself thinking, at odd times, "oh c'mon, he'd never say that". She also writes convincingly as an alien "lord", and can make us believe that the creatures she has invented are speaking exactly how they would be. I never had to suspend belief at any point in this series. I was completely and totally physically there.
This is a book that should be read. Mills is a writer who should be encouraged. I haven't encountered a writer of her quality for many, many years. I can't wait to see how she matures in her craft.

Better than the first--and that was awesome

I couldn't tear myself away from this story. I was given an ARC copy to be a "beta" reader--and I had to read it at my computer due to technical difficulties. I promised the author I'd get back to her in a week. It took me a day to read the book, because it glued me to my seat (much to my husband's and children's consternation).
If you liked the mixture of sci-fi and fantasy in the first book, you'll love it in the second installment. This book has more of a story arc than the first, although the arc is internal as our hero grows into her abilities and begins to decipher her world(s). There are still underlying mysteries to be solved. There are also dinosaurs, dragons, a magical quest (literally) and mythical-like beings a plenty. Did I mention dinosaurs?
It's a great read and I highly recommend it. If you haven't read the first -- go get it! It's free.

Very solid installment - 3.5 stars

I adored Ms. Mills first book, Nolander. It was original, creative and deeply, wonderfully weird. Mills has a true joy (and talent) for story-telling.
What becomes very apparent when reading its sequel, is that Solatium has a much stronger guiding editorial hand. While part of me feels that this sacrifices some of the zany impulsivity of the first Emanations novel, I also appreciate the strong, linear narrative pull through Beth's journey that Nolander lacked.
This novel was, in fact, a literal journey insofar as Beth was required to go from point A to point Z (for a number of reasons that shall remain undisclosed here).
I think journeyman novels pose a number of potential challenges for authors, the biggest one being the tendency to plod (pun potentially intended?); there is only so much that can happen in a journey that can distract readers from the fact that the heroine has not yet reached her destination and therefore whatever happens at that moment - the physical journey being finished - remains a narrative blank. In other words: prepare for a semi-unresolved ending.
At points, Solatium does indeed plod. The true reason for Beth's journey is quite slow to reveal itself and it takes her a considerable amount of time to come to grips with it. It also - and I'm not sure how I feel about this - undoes a lot of the subtle, simmering tension between Beth and Cordus.
Her primary companion/minder, John Williams, who was introduced in Nolander, is characteristically cranky, taciturn and unfriendly. He unbends very VERY slightly as the journey continues, but is overall somewhat unlikeable. There's obviously quite a bit that will reveal itself about John in later installments, but he's, dare I say, somewhat of a tedious journey companion?
Beth herself shows true character development here. There's a slow coming into her own as a potential power. She begins to grasp the subtleties of political games - the scenes with Negus are an absolute treat - and the implications of her own value. Her journey, which began under false pretenses, is ended on her own terms.
All and all, this is an incredibly solid effort by Mills. Her next installment is an automatic purchase for me.
