About the Author
Andreas Meyer is currently Verification Architect with Cadence Design Systems. Previously, he was a founder and Chief Technical Officer of Zaiq Technologies, Inc. in Woburn, MA. Zaiq is a recognized leader in system-level design and verification for complex, high-performance, system-on-chip based designs. Andy lead the technical development of the company’s intellectual property business and the development of Zaiq’s design and verification methodologies. Prior to founding Zaiq, Andy worked as an independent consultant for a number of leading companies, including Teradyne Corporation, Sun Microsystems and Sequoia Systems. Andy holds a BSEE from the University of Illinois at Champaign and an MSECE from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Explaining why

Instead of attempting to teach you the "howtos" of functional verification this book teaches you the "whys". This causes it to be much less like a textbook than many others on the same subject. Therefore reading this book cover to cover is relatively easy and useful. Examples given are at the appropriate level of complexity - neither too simple nor too complex.
Readers of this book could easily range from senior management to test coders. Senior management would learn the purposes behind various aspects of functional verification and why the cost and complexity continues to rise. Engineers would be exposed to the reasoning behind the use of some functional verification techniques.
Each chapter discusses the ideas behind some aspects of functional verification with examples of how this might be used in an actual system being verified. There are few code examples since that would not contribute to the purpose of the book. The examples are primarily system architectures and how a specific component of functional verification would be used in testing that architecture.
The list of subjects covered is complete relative to the current state of the art.
Overall this is a very useful book to read. I would suggest that most verification engineers and their managers would benefit from exposure to this book. Even if you know all of this already it is a good book to have available to explain to other people what you are doing.

Good introduction to ASIC/SoC functional verification

Meyer's book starts with basic concepts of functional verification and gradually introduces you to more advanced topics such as constrained random testing and hardware/software co-simulation techniques. This is a very good book for design engineers and project managers who would like to quickly get up-to-speed on ASIC/SoC functional verification concepts and advanced techniques. For experienced ASIC/SoC verification engineers, this is a good book to refresh your memory on the topic.

Good Introduction to DV, but overpriced

This is a great book for the college student, co-op/intern, or any engineer or manager new to the field of DV (Design Verification). I could easily see a college course being built around this book. Although the seasoned verification engineer may not find much in the way of new information in this book, it may provide insite into why others in your team, group, company, or industry don't quite do things the same way you would. One of the greatest dangers in this, as in any field, is zealotry (bordering on facism) for a particular verification methodology above all others.

Meyer has done a brilliant job of capturing the various approaches to functional verification without any bias toward one methodology. He, in fact, deserves credit for stressing that there is no single verification methodology that fits all engineering needs. In 10 years of experience in FPGA design and verification I find that it often takes a blend of approaches to achieve confidence in your verification environment.

He also deserves much credit for divorcing the concepts of functional verification from any one language or tool set. In fact you don't need to know the syntax for any verification language or have experience with any particular simulation tool suite to read and understand this book.

If there is one complaint I have, it is that the price of this book is a little too steep; espcially for a soft-cover book with small pages and large print (thus my four-star rating). Perhaps, though, this is just my experience speaking. It would be well worth the money if I were just starting out in the field.

What can I say about Hide? Holy rollercoaster of emotions, Batman! One minute you're frustrated, the next you're teary, and then the next your pulse is racing. Hide will make you want to throw your Kindle, pick it up, and then try to crawl inside to soothe the characters.

Jamie's past is heart-wrenching. I enjoyed the past/present flip of the chapters; never once was I lost or confused (which sometimes happens when authors play with time). Since I knew Mitch was Jamie's love interest, I couldn't wait for them to get together. Their back and forth banter was cute, but in the back of my mind I was shouting, "Work it out, already!" I had a soft spot for Mitch immediately, and it only grew with each veiled insult hurled at him by his brothers and, occasionally, Jamie. Their chemistry is off the charts hot, and when they do "connect", it's worth the wait. Ms. Page knows how to write a steamy scene ;)

I knew Hide was classified as romantic suspense, but I didn't know how suspenseful it would be. Let me just say WOW. Every time one of those black letters appeared, my stomach sank right along with Jamie's. Thankfully the author gives us plenty of backstory throughout the novel as to who is behind the letters and why. Brooke gives you plenty of reasons to love her characters, even the secondary ones, so when the ending of Hide comes WHAM! Right in the feels. Trust me, my notes at the end were full of !!!! and "Blankety-Blank better be okay!"

If you enjoy your love stories with a little sass, a lot of heat, and plenty of twists, Hide is for you. Now, while we wait for the second installment, let's all cross our fingers and say a prayer for Blankety-Blank. And no, it's not who you think it is ;)

Riveting, heart stopping and intense!

This book was so freaking intense and has left me breathless. People get hurt, lives are threatened, it's like a roller coaster . I mean, this book has left me baffled. This book's intensity took me to a whole new level when it comes to reading this genre. I just found myself hooked from beginning to end and these types of books are the best because you know that they are just that good.

Mitch is the youngest Conklin brother. He is arrogant, self-centered and all he cares about is himself. He never takes a woman seriously but the one thing he is good at is his job. He tends to flirt with Jamie non-stop and she is just plain irritated by him. But the more he flirts and the more time she tends to spend with him, she starts realizing that Mitch really isn't that bad of a person as she assumed he was. He can be annoying and irritating but deep down inside he knows how to make her laugh and entertain her. He has won her over.

Jamie has been hiding and by hiding I mean, she's hiding from her past. She throws all her time to her work and tries to keep all men at a distance because she's afraid that her past will come back and continue tormenting her. True to her word, she starts receiving letters making her more nervous knowing that he has found her and is keeping an eye on her.

Mitch and Jamie take on a relationship even though she's afraid that he might get hurt because of her. But then she realized that she can't hide forever. She is determined to confront her past if it comes down to that and she wants to make whatever it is that she has with Mitch work because he's the first guy in a long time to make her feel again.

Mitch and Jamie are damn good together and I am so proud of her. She has finally found the courage to stand up for what she wants and is not afraid to confront this shadow that has been tormenting her for so long. But there were consequences that came along with her bravery and now we have to wait for the next installment to find out what in the world is going to happen with Jamie and Mitch.

This book really was worth my time to read -- 5 stars all the way!

WHAT just happened??

I finished reading a book by Brooke Page​ that I couldn't put down. It was one of those books that has such a great suspenseful plot that keeps driving forward but at the same time leaving you wanting to know what's going to happen next.

HIDE is the first in a set of two books in the Black Letter Series (When reading this book I was so excited because I LVE Brooke and had the chance to meet her and hug her hard! AND she wrote Conklin's Blueprints which is an awesome book.. If you haven't read it you really should! Buy link: http://goo.gl/7SZiMc) yes that is right I said book 1..... I did NOT however realized this when I stated the book as I should have, but at the END! The end left me going , WTF, what is going on here?? (Ask Brooke about the messages I sent her )

This story is about Jamie and her involvement with the Conklin men when suddenly after a year her past starts to come back to haunt her. Throughout the book you slowly gain bits and pieces of Jamie's past, and find out who is sending these letters. Jamie made a decision when she was 17 that effected her entire family and she regrets it Every. Single. Day. Her memories are a constant reminder of the choice she made but when the letter start showing up again her panic sets in and she needs to make a choice to give in to her fear and push everyone away to protect them or live her life... Which will she choose?? Read to find out!

I loved this book (even though it's a cliffhanger... Yes I said the c-word... ) and can't wait to read the second part when it comes out! This book gives you all sorts of feels; anger, pity, empathy, sadness, fear and even a bit of swooning over Mitch!

About the Author

Terance D. Miethe is Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He is author of Simple Statistics: Applications in Criminology and Criminal Justice (OUP, 2006) and coauthor of many books, including Crime Profiles: The Anatomy of Dangerous Persons, Places, and Situations (OUP, 2005).

Jane Florence Gauthier is Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Her current research interests focus on gender differences in criminal offending and issues surrounding community structure and crime.

Statistics is not as hard as everyone makes it out to be

This book is very well-written, making the information easy to comprehend without having to re-read something several times. It is a great price and I used it for one of my classes. My grade in the class reflected the helpfulness of this book.

Excellent for both undergrad and graduate statistics courses

This may sound a bit hipster-ish but my first copy of this book was back when it was still spiral bound and available only at the UNLV bookstore, it was a great resource then and cost about the same. By the time I entered grad school in 08 this book was in it's current form and was used in my grad stats class taught by Miethe. Now, four years later I am using this book as an instructor in both undergraduate and graduate courses at Arizona State University.

Everything about this book is fantastic, the only thing I would like to see is an e-book edition to keep up with the growing trend.

The conflict between might and right was resolved in many different ways.

Chinese, Greek and Indian thinkers reflected on the origin and purposes of the state. Status and class were embedded in Indian and Chinese thought, the nation in Israelite thought. The Stoics and Cicero, on the other hand, saw humanity as a single unit. Political philosophy, using logic, evidence and dialectic, was invented in China and Greece, statecraft in China and India, political science in Greece. Plato and Aristotle, followed by Polybius and Cicero, started 'western' political philosophy.

This book covers political philosophy, religious ideology, constitutional theory, social ethics, official and popular political culture.

He should be considered one of the greatest and most consistent specialists in medieval political thought, but in this book he shows an impressive comprehension of the sources of ancient cultures ... can be highly recommended. Political ideas in Antiquity: wide-ranging splendid overview

The synopsis of the book provided by the "" is fairly accurate. Therefore, I will only point out that (a) books on comparative history of ideas seem to be rather scarce; (b) many books entitled "History of ...whatever" only provide information about the West, the rest of the world being almost ignored, but Black's book is different, is truly global.

So when I found this book I decide it to give it a chance, in despite of not finding previous comments on it. I was surprised that no one else had made a comment before to this masterful work, which, in my opinion, is impartial and enlightening. Perhaps, because of the author's style, the book is no very engaging, but it is not dry either. In any event I think that the professional historian and the educated layperson alike can savour it. So I add my review, my rate being between 5 (content) and 3 (pleasure, sometimes falling to 2, sometimes raising to 4). I highly recommend it.

The book is short, less than 240 pages (plus bibliography), and is divided in the following way: Introduction / 1. Early Communities and States / 2. Egypt / 3. Mesopotamia, Assyria, Babilón / 4. Iran / 5. Israel / 6. India / 7. China / 8. The Greeks / 9. Rome / 10. Greco-Roman Humanism / 11. The Kingdom of heaven and the church of Christ / 12. Themes: similarities and differences between cultures / 13. Conclusion.

Other interesting books dealing with the history of ideas that I would recommend would be the following: 1) "The West and Islam: Religion and Political Thought in World History", another excellent book by the same author; 2) "America's Constitution: A Biography" by Akhil Reed Amar; 3) "Citizens to Lords: A Social History of Western Political Thought from Antiquity to the Middle Ages" by Ellen Meiksins Wood; 4) "God Owes Us Nothing: A Brief Remark on Pascal's Religion and on the Spirit of Jansenism" by Leszek Kolakowski; 5) "The Passions and the Interests: Political Arguments for Capitalism before its Triumph", by Albert O. Hirschman; and 6) "The Proper Study of Mankind: An Anthology of Essays" by Isaiah Berlin.

Additionally, for those looking for a broad framework to understand the past, I would also suggest reading the following works, whose scope is as amazingly global as Black's: 1. Agrarian cultures: "Pre-industrial societies" by Patricia Crone; 2. Economy: "The world economy. A millennial perspective" (2001) plus "The world economy: Historical Statistics" (2003) by Angus Maddison (a combined edition of these two volumes appeared on December 2007); 3. Government: "The History of Government" by S.E. Finer; 4. Ideas: "Ideas, a History from Fire to Freud", by Peter Watson; 5. Religion: "The Phenomenon of Religion: A Thematic Approach" by Moojan Momen; and 6. War: "War in Human Civilization" by Azar Gat.

Every page is fascinating, and overall very informative and often relevant to today's politics

A readable, erudite and useful book. It is well organized and wide ranging, but focused on its subject. Three things stand out especially in this author's analysis. First, the power of mere ideas to shape societies and how people think. Secondly, a tendency of the powerful in many places to make the right to worship the god their sole preserve. And thirdly, the inexorable connexion between politics and religion. The bibliography is comprehensive and not confined to political theorists. Gombrich, for instance, is a source. Number one props book for Iyengar Yoga

I have "chairs for yoga" and "vol 2" of Eyal Shifroni's "Pros for Yoga". Have to admit this is a number one book for props, clear instructions and extensive alternatives to cater different body situation.

This is not for beginners, one has to have experience at class and want more for home set up / practise.

I have been attending Iyengar yoga class for more than 3.5 years and I benefit a lot from Eyal's book series. Home practises and guidance from the book becomes my daily routine.

just like the chair yoga book

Very helpful and very thoughtful, just like the chair yoga book. I particularly like the uttansana in an upside down chair seat and using a strap around the heel and hips for vira bhadrasana III. Keep the books coming!

Very credible and insightful- I found this book useful, not just for the photos, but also for the text which was clearly written. I recommend it as a resource and will buy the next one he writes too
