Embodies several invaluable messages for young people

Howard B. Wigglebottom Listens to His Heart is a children's picturebook that embodies several invaluable messages for young people. When young rabbit Howard B. Wigglebottom is mocked by his peers for dancing, he decides he will never dance again. But when he confides his sadness to his grandfather, his grandfather reminds him that he comes from a long line of Wigglebottoms who love to dance. Howard's grandfather teaches him that he should dance because it's fun and he loves it first and foremost! A list of suggestions for lessons or reflection and the end of the book go over the central themes of feeling something one's heart, the value of confiding in a trusted older person, issues that can affect self-esteem, the value of trying something different for the fun of it, and the benefit of connecting with one's roots and family legacy. Perhaps the most important message is to "Be proud of who you are!" Highly recommended for public library collections as well as for children's bookshelves.

He wanted to be debonair
He wanted to belong
Alas, alack, to his despair
Things kept on going wrong

This book shows that even though
Things may not look too bright
A friend can be the one to show
You how to make things right

Do your best, hold your head high
Be proud, at least you've tried
In time you'll find the reason why
You feel so good inside

This is a follow up to the book Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen, and deals with an issue that affects every child at one time or another. Told in simple language with beautiful illustrations, this is a must read for any child experiencing a period of self-doubt. Recommended for ages 7 and up.

I have not read a textbook on this topic that surpasses this one. The authors write in a way that makes you feel that you know them. Should be required reading for anyone who wants to hone their understanding of the subject matter.

About the Author

Professor Sam Zhang Shanyong, better known as Sam Zhang, is a tenured full professor at the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Professor Zhang serves as editor-in-chief for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Letters (USA) and principal editor for the Journal of Materials Research (USA). He has worked on processing and characterization of nanocomposite thin films and coatings for 20 years and has authored/co-authored more than 260 peer-reviewed international journal papers with an average of more than 12 citations per paper, 7 books, 20 book chapters, and guest-edited more than 20 journal volumes. His book on Materials Characterization Techniques has been adopted as a textbook by one European and eight American universities. The book was also translated into Chinese, published by China Scientific Press, and was used as textbook in many Chinese universities.

Professor Dongliang Zhao is the chief engineer at Central Iron and Steel Research Institute (CISRI, Beijing, China) since 2009 and the director of CISRI’s Institute of Functional Materials. CISRI plays a leading role in China’s R&D in superalloys. Professor Zhao’s research interests include computational material science, magnetic materials, energy materials, and superalloys. He has been the leading principal investigator of or participated in more than 20 Chinese national research projects. Professor Zhao has published 40 journal papers and was granted six patents. In 2003, Professor Zhao was conferred the title of "Beijing Outstanding Young Engineer" by Beijing City Government. In 2006, he was recognized by the State Department as one of the National Star Researchers and in 2008, he was conferred the title of "National Defense Science and Technology Innovation leader."

All you need to pass the shelf

A 25 year old medical student comes into your clinic complaining of anxiety for the past week. He tells you he has an upcoming shelf exam in psychiatry and "I haven't studied." Further history reveals that his clinical rotation did not expose him to all aspects of psychiatry, and there are major gaps in his knowledge base. His medical history is unremarkable other than a healing bruise on his right temple from wrestling a PCP-intoxicated schizophrenic to the ground. He reports some difficulty falling asleep but notes that "reading case files helps." When asked how his rotation has gone so far, the student says "fine, but I think one of the attendings has it out for me." When asked if he had any reason to believe the attending was conspiring against him, the student responds "dude, it's an expression. I meant he doesn't like me." Student denies anhedonia, depressed mood, or audio or visual hallucinations. Utox is negative.

What treatment approach will be most effective in this patient?

A. psychodynamic psychotherapy to find the source of his anxiety
B. cognitive-behavioral therapy to overcome his fear of PCP-intoxicated schizophrenics
C. risperidone for his persecutory delusion
D. full leather restraints to assist study discipline

E. Psychodynamic psychotherapy generally requires the patient to meet with a therapist for 4 or more sessions per week. Also, the patient has given you an identifiable stressor, his upcoming shelf exam. There are no indications that the encounter with the schizophrenic is the cause for his anxiety, so CBT would not be indicated. The patient clarified that he does not hold a persecutory delusion toward his attending but merely responded in a form of casual lay speak. Leather restraints may prove helpful in avoiding study distractions, but the patient would require a 1:1 sitter to turn the pages. Great review book! Very helpful on psychiatry clerkship preparing for the shelf exam. Case scenarios are similar to shelf exam style. Explanations to questions are thorough and well written. The broad range of topics is very complete, from adult to pediatric psychiatry, to pharm management and legal and ethical issues and the two complete practice exams are very useful.

Lange Q&A Psychiatry, 10th EditionSo far I have completed the first 2 Chap and believe that this is a great resource. The questions are interesting, well written, and incorporate concepts from other fields of medicine to make the clinical scenarios realistic. I recommend Lange Q&A for learning about Psychiatry,and preparing for the NBME shelf exam. Other students that took the shelf before me recommended this book in addition to World and rather than "other" popular Psych question books.

Addendum:
After completing the NBME Psych Shelf exam I believe this book was instrumental in doing well (contrary to popular belief Psych Shelf is not easy).

Deliciously shocking...and motivating.

This book blew my mind… and was a real boot in the pants for me. Beyond educating me about the fascinating—and it turns out ancient—history of “editorial cartooning.” It inspired me to be less afraid to push the envelope with my own work. Really a unique book, with deliciously shocking visuals and commentary. If you’re interesting in how artists have spanked the status quo over the centuries, and continue to do so today, I would highly recommend Mr. Fish’s book.

WARNING! Graphic Content is a worthy effort and certainly worthy of reading by anyone with a keen interest in art and society

In his [new] book, [Mr. Fish] describes cartoonists a '...a pest tasked with the mosquito-like responsibility of disrupting complacency...'.

This isn't the first book that's written about the power of cartoons. In 2013, we reviewed Victor Navasky's The Art of Controversy, a review of controversial cartoons through the centuries. But the approach and scope of Warning are novel. Instead of using a chronological order, the author jumps back and forth through time. This approach is not only refreshing, it also allows the author more freedom to compare cartoons and artworks from different time periods. Mr Fish has also broadened the scope by broadening the definition of what he considers to be a political cartoon. His selection includes paintings, sculptures, poetry and even performance art.

Cartoons have, since their inception, been considered a form of 'low art' (if they were considered art at all), but in my opinion Mr. Fish is quite correct to put them on par with other art that makes a social statement. What the book succeeds in doing is to make us reflect on the nature of art, and the role of art in society. Mr. Fish focuses on the ability of art to upset the status quo, to mobilize people and to inspire change.

In a way, Warning is a guided tour through a museum full of unexpected surprises, its pages filled with art you had not seen before, and familiar art seen in a new light. Structured like a play with different acts, the book is interspersed with conversations with people such as Noam Chomsky and Art Spiegelman.

[WARNING! Graphic Content] is a worthy effort and certainly worthy of reading by anyone with a keen interest in art and society. There are not that many books that focus on political cartoons, and even less that do this as eloquently as Warning. Plus, you'll find out why New Yorker cartoons suck.

A book like no other I've seen

A really outstanding piece of work. Part art, part political history, but ultimately call to arms for anyone interested in changing society to reflect the concerns of the many. A deep thinker with a literary talent that surprised me. Mr Fish is a voice and an artist sorely needed, and what a talent!. Courageous and discourteous to all the right people. And damn funny too.
