About the Author
Baltasar Gracián was born in 1601 in Belmonte, Aragon and entered the Society of Jesus in 1619. Teaching in Jesuit colleges across the Kingdom of Aragon, he was also at one time confessor to the viceroy of Aragon and chaplain to the Spanish army. But it is as one of the great Spanish stylists and moralists that he is best known. He wrote a series of short moral tracts marked by their elliptical, epigrammatic style, as well as a three volume allegorical novel, The Critic (1651-57). Published in 1647, The Pocket Oracle and Art of Prudence influenced the vogue for the form in France, and was quickly translated into the major European languages.

Jeremy Robbins is Forbes Professor of Hispanic Studies at the University of Edinburgh. He is the author of numerous studies on Spanish Baroque culture and a General Editor of the Bulletin of Spanish Studies.

Some like Niccolo, but I favor Baltasar

I have friends who read The Prince like a bible, and its true that Machiavelli is worthy of repeated study, both as a period piece and window into the Renaissance Italian soul, and as possibly the most notorious treatise on Realpolitik ever written. Machiavelli, like Nietzsche, has been misused by the unscrupulous and decried by the ignorant; also, IMHO, both writers were actually better historians and analysts than they were philosophers per se.

Baltasar Gracian, in the Pocket Oracle, has accomplished what Niccolo never could, nor would have wanted to: a day to day primer of sage advice from a trained Jesuit mind who walked and worked in the highest halls of power in his time. The lessons are pithy and epigrammatic, both simple yet deserving of deep reflection and consideration and, most importantly, are eminently USEFUL in almost every interpersonal interaction in your day to day life, whether you are a dish washer or a senator -- his teachings are that universal.

Robert Greene strip-mined Gracian for 48 Laws of Power, but again IMHO, it's always best to refer back to the seminal source even after being presented with a good a digest as Greene presented. This is the Penguin edition, so you of course have the value added of their wonderful introductions, with historical references anchoring Gracian's life and the impact of the Oracle itself. Also, this translation is, I feel, much better than those I've seen marketed under the variant title Art of Worldly Wisdom.

I read this book everyday. I recommend it to every man woman or child that wants to live their very best. Gracian was one of the wisest men who ever lived, and this is the free distillation of his wisdom.

Review of: "The Pocket Oracle and Art of Prudence" by Baltasar Gracian. Baltasar Gracian was a Jesuit teaching in colleges across the Kingdom of Aragon in addition to being the confessor to the viceroy of Aragon and chaplain to the Spanish army at the siege of Lleida. His later fame was premised on his being considered one of the great Spanish stylists and moralists of the mid-seventeenth century. The Pocket Oracle and Art of Prudence was published in 1647. It was based upon Gracian's own experiences and consists of a collection of three-hundred aphorisms offering "pragmatic, hard-headed and coldly calculated advice" on how to thrive in the cut-throat world of Baroque society. Each of the three-hundred units in the book consists of an initial aphorism/maxim followed by a commentary. For example, [aphorism] 267: "Silken words, and Mild Nature: Arrows pierce the body, but harsh words the soul. A pill can make your breath smell sweet, and to know how to sell air is one of life's subtlest skills. Most things are bought with words, and they're enough to achieve the impossible. All our dealings are in the air, and the breath of a prince greatly inspires. So your mouth should always be full of sugar to sweeten your words so that they taste good even to your enemies. The only way to be loved is to be sweet-natured." This book is comparable to Machiavelli's "The Prince," Benvenuto Cellini's "Autobiography," and Baldesar Castiglione's "The Book of the Courtier" but is much more useful in illuminating the human condition of how and why we act the way we do. As applicable today as when written and very masterfully composed. The only caveat to the reader is that it may remind him or her of many people they know, perhaps even themselves. Recommended as a guide to navigate through the corridors of power; the boardroom or the bedroom, it is a must have. Recommended without hesitation or reservation at five+ stars.

This is not a story, but an excellent example of the "pocket mirrors", little books of advice for leaders and princes going back to the Middle Ages. Balthasar Gracian was a Jesuit, and as many Jesuits of his time, rubbed shoulders with the elite and powerful far and wide. Jesuits are Catholic priests, considered the "marines of the Church", and thus are painfully practical, educated men, deeply dedicated to understanding the way things work, in order to reveal the most effective strategies for missionaries and workers of GOD. This book primarily focuses on personal improvement, self-discipline, courtly manners and courtesy, and influencing the movers and shakers of the world. Considered perhaps too concerned with the material world, many of Gracian's books were frowned upon by his superiors, not because they were bad advice or lead anyone astray, but because they were primarily concerned with worldly matters of state and state craft, rather than the spiritual realms.

Very Dense

The author obviously has a lot of experience and also obviously put a tremendous amount of effort into writing this book. Nevertheless, it is very difficult to read. The type is small and there are very few line breaks, bullet lists, charts, or other visual aids to help the reader assimilate the information. Some paragraphs go on for two pages without any sort of break. The information in the book might be wonderful, but the book design [how the information is laid out to make it easier for the reader to absorb] is terrible - among the worst I have seen, and I have several hundred technical books on my shelves. I am really surprised that CRC Press (a major publisher that happens to have also published some of the best technical books that I have purchased) allowed this to go out in its current form.

I thank God for the author because as a christian woman it is always a blessing to believe that I will find my God-given soul mate in a world that always shows the opposite. Luv it Luv it Can't Get Enough

This book is a GREAT read, my boyfriend and I read and discuss, discuss and read. We use this as a reference. Dr. Ron breaks it all down regarding relationships period. This book would be good for singles, married folks and those who are dating that may be getting serious. We (boyfriend and myself) find that after reading certain chapters we tend to always go back into discussion way after the fact of the material that we've read. I love this book and I have been telling many about it. I also appreciate the fact that the material is not one-sided. I oops We will make another purchase of one of Dr. Ron's books I know definitely.

This is a Christmas Present I gave myself. I've been widowed for 4 years and have no idea about dating. I watched Dr. Elmore of TV and wanted to read the book. I'm only through the 3rd chapter (started it last night) and already feel uplifted. I want a christian relationship and had no idea even where to start. Now I believe I do.

You wont regret!

Absolutely amazing book.
I left a review on good reads for this book and it still stands. One the few books on wattpad I really enjoyed. The characters were reaslitic teenagers and the whole book wasn't just some sex crazed story. It had an interesting plot and some unexpected twists. Highly recommend it!

T. J. Chung is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Alabama, Huntsville. His research interests include numerical simulation of quantum gravity, plasma dynamics in fusion reactors, hypersonic turbulent flows, computational fluid dynamics, continuum mechanics, numerical modeling of combustion and propulsion, fluid dynamics, and heat and mass transfer. He has also authored seven other books, including General Continuum Mechanics and Applied Continuum Mechanics, both published by Cambridge University Press.

Great Breadth, but...

This book covers just about every aspect Computational Fluid Dynamics. The fact that a single author could master such a range of topics and articulate them clearly is truly remarkable. Yet, I can't recommend this book. I bought it with high hopes in 2004, eager to broaden my knowledge beyond the finite volume method and SIMPLE algorithm. Well, it's been over three years and the book has mostly sat on the shelf. Every time I pull it down to learn some tidbit, I come away empty handed. The writing is high level and abstract, and it's difficult to extract useful nuggets from it. The first line of the preface says, "This book is intended for the beginner as well as for the practitioner in CFD." As a long time practitioner, I can't see it as useful for either. A typical section consists of a brief intro, then a bunch of equations, followed by some results extracted from a journal paper. Then it's on to the next section. Consider Chapter 3 on the Finite Difference Method. The first 5 pages are an onslaught of 45 equations and almost no descriptive text. How does one get a sense of the method from this? I would strongly recommend reading a section or two before buying this book.

A comprehensive book that fails to deliver the essential details.

The first time I saw this book I thought it would be one of the best CFD books , but after reading it I was disappointing.
There are so many equations in this book, but the author fails to explain the details and concepts.
The book could have been much better. The chapters are very comprehensive ( covers FDM , FEM and some FVM ) , which is one of the few advantages of the book.

GREAT INTRODUCTION TO NUMERICAL PDEs IN CFD

I like this book a great deal, but do note that I'm reviewing it as a treatment of numerical approaches to partial differential equations in computational fluid dynamics and not as a text for CFD as a whole.

My background is applied mathematics via finance and economics. I'm interested in solving parabolic and elliptic PDEs by finite differences, and eventually by finite elements and spectral techniques, as a means of pricing various financial derivatives.

Chung's book is a remarkably thorough treatment of the available techniques in these areas with substantial pointers to the primary literature. Explanations tend to be rather terse but nonetheless complete. More explanation, and possibly a few more examples, might be helpful, but that's a question of authorial style. Indeed, at some points I'm happy for a spare treatment that highlights the logical structure of the problem at hand in a subject laden with multiple layers of literature and detail.

To calibrate, I find Chung's book more accessible than Roache (CFD), Richtmyer and Morton, Thomas, and Elman et al; about the same level as LeVeque (Finite Difference Methods) and Ames (Numerical Methods); and harder than Smith, Morton and Mayers, Trefethen (Spectral Methods), Pozrikidis (Finite and Spectral Element Methods), and the treatment of PDEs in Press et al. If you're willing to work with pencil in-hand, as with almost all science books, and to hit the stacks occasionally for back-up material, Chung's book is a great entry point to numerical PDEs.
