Wildi Rules!

If you are interested in owning, collecting, operating Hasselblad cameras, then you really need to have a copy of this! To my knowledge, Ernst Wildi is one of the most respected authorities in medium format photography and one of the gurus in Hasselblad history. Just about everything one needs to know about using any "Hassy" or "'blad", new or old, is in this book. It includes how-to on accessories, lenses, film backs - you name it! This makes a great reference. Wildi's style is easy to read, intelligent but not arrogant, and mostly done from the perspective of a teacher or coach. Wildi is an excellent photographer, by the way! So, curl up in your easy chair with your beautiful Hasselblad in your lap, and read about its pedigree and how you can make beautiful pictures!

Old, but still very useful

I recently purchased a Hasselblad 500CM and wanted to get up to speed with it. While I have a fair amount of experience with film and digital photography, I'm still a novice when it comes to the medium format world. This manual has been a great help. Clear writing, good organization, helpful diagrams. It's an excellent resource, even though it is rather dated (I believe the most current version is the 8th edition, and this is the 4th.) I purposely bought an older edition since the more recent ones devote a significant amount of text to the digital Hasselblads, which for me, remain only a dream (at least for now!).

There is some background material on photography that probably will be old hat to anyone with any degree of experience, but you don't feel like the author is talking down to you even on the basics. Plus, never hurts to go through the fundamentals again.

Highly recommend for anyone with a pre-digital Hasselblad.

Thorough, Systematic and Excellent (the review includes my rant about poor quality education)

I have been teaching geometry for over thirty years. I've used this book or an earlier incarnation of it for most of that time. Although the book has it's weaknesses, it is overall thorough and systematic. Negative reviews of this textbook are based primarily on a comparison of this book to watered-down texts now more popular with schools. I also tutor and one of my students explained to me that his school uses a different text, because that text concentrates on material covered on the SAT. I've had students who transfered to another school come back and tell me I made geometry unnecessarily complicated. His new school had an easier text. As another reviewer noted, the textbook committees of many schools are primarily concerned with protecting the reputation of the school by passing students and NOT with the education of the student. They perpetuate mediocrity. Better schools in my area use this textbook, but most often it's only used for "honors" classes.

This is a difficult text, not because it's a bad book, but because it presents a high quality, proof-based exposure to geometry. For years I've been hearing fellow educators tout how courses expose students to higher order thinking. The fact is, education in the United States, especially math education, does not expose students to higher order thinking, but substitutes mechanical processes for true understanding, and politically correct processes like projects and group work for rigor. Schools now use group tests and quizzes so students have a better chance of passing, not a better chance of learning. This begins back at the lowest levels of math education. Geometry is usually the first course of any sort where the student truly has to think. In algebra (not the way it should be taught, but the way it is taught), students memorize mechanical processes without understanding why the process works. If they remember the steps required for a particular type of problem, and get their arithmetic right, they get a correct answer. When a student creates a two-column proof in geometry, reasoning from limited information to a final conclusion, no teacher or text can teach a student to always get a right answer. Getting a right answer involves actual thought and may take time and repeated analysis.

Geometry is a language intensive branch of mathematics. If students don't acquire the vocabulary of the study (definitions, postulates and theorems), they can't "think" about the problem. It's like trying to lear a foreign language without learning vocabulary. This book does a very good job of laying out this "vocabulary", with a few exceptions.

The authors of the book have made the book weaker gradually over the last twenty years. I believe they have done so in an attempt to make the course easier. Unfortunately, they've merely muddied the water. Incongruities and inaccuracies have crept in over the years, but the text still remains the best available.

I suspect the publishers will be dropping this textbook from it's catalog. It hasn't been updated since 1999, although this is unclear. When I last checked with the publisher, they had not made any plans to update it. It is actually beneficial if they don't update it, I suppose, since when they have in more recent years, the book has become of less quality.

Finally, if you have a child taking geometry with this book, count your blessings. Help your child to be successful by having them memorize the vocabulary, postulates and theorems as a first step to understanding. Additionally, encourage them not to give up and keep thinking.

I love this book

I have taught Honors and College Prep Geometry with this book (and its previous edition) for sixteen years.
This year I tried a different book with one of my classes. I am begging to go back to this book.
This book does not have all the 'bells and whistles' of new Geometry textbooks. It doesn't need them. My new textbook has powerpoint presentations, lesson planners, CD ROM testbanks, etc. Guess what? You can have them. They don't present lessons in any manner I would present them, and the test banks don't test the content of the chapter. In addition, I prefer to supplement lessons with my own real life examples and further explanations, not 'canned' material that is found in my current text and its technology.
A good teacher can take this book and raise the bar for academic excellence. No fluff, nothing watered down.
Newer is not better.
I know my students were given a mental workout-challenged themselves- and understood Geometry when I used this book. My classes will be going back to this book soon.
To the reviewers who say there aren't enough examples, that's the point! Geometry is about developing a skill. You can't build a skill if everything is given to you. Push yourself a little harder, don't be afraid to fail, and ask questions. That's how you learn.
The one con is that test questions are not available on a modern CD ROM, eliminating the need to cut and paste (and not giving the ability to change test versions with a click of a button).
Still, the test questions supplied are fantastic.

It shows them how easily they could go back too the beginning

The 1962 Caldecott medal winner is a re-telling of an Indian fable by Marcia Brown. In it, is a story of a hermit who is thinking about things big and small. While pondering on this huge sees a small mouse pass by. Then he sees a crow coming to eat the mouse and intervened, thinking how it is unjust that since the crow is bigger, it would eat the mouse. Afterwards, he takes the mouse to his hut, and there a cat tries to eat it. Since the hermit knew magic, he also turned the mouse into a cat to stop the other feline from eating it. Then came a dog who barked in the forest and scared the cat. The hermit then changed the cat into a dog. Next came a tiger who wanted to feast if on the canine and the hermit changed it into a total tiger. At last, the tiger is one of the biggest animals on the forest and becomes too proud of his appearance. The hermit told him he made him who he was, for he once was a mouse. Enraged with the hermit, the tiger decided to kill him. Since the hermit could read his mind, he accused him of being ungrateful and as punishment he would be turned to his former self. Finally, the hermit saw the mouse pass by and kept pondering about big and small.
This story is an adaptation of a Indian fable, and is quite appropriate for children. Even in their short age, they have probably already thought about big and small, maybe even because of a bully and can understand the stories theme. It covers the topic of food cycle, for you can observe the small animal being the bigger animal’s food. And it also covers the lesson which is not to be excessively proud. You should always be humble, no matter how high or big you have become, especially if you got there thanks for someone’s generosity.
I consider that this book can help bring humility to those children who lack some. It shows them how easily they could go back too the beginning. With this story how the small easily turned back into one after getting to be a royal tiger. Being humble is something that each person should strive to be, for pride, especially in excess, only brings trouble in the end. You should recognize your talents or assets, but not be boastful because of them. It also can give insight on how things work inn the real world, how the bigger person or animal, not necessarily in size, always wants to devour the little person or animal.

An Ancient Indian Treasure

"A rajah of ancient India is said to have had such popular animal fables collected as a 'mirror for princes' to instruct his errant sons." This particular fable is about a mouse who is helped by a forest hermit with magic powers. The Indian hermit magically transforms the mouse into a cat, a dog, and finally a tiger; however, when the tiger gets too proud and forgets its origins, the hermit turns it back into a mouse.
I love this book because the story teaches many lessons and does not have just one definitive moral. The story could serve as a springboard for discussing several topics with young children: the importance of knowing where you came from, the importance of humility, the Hindu concepts of reincarnation and karma, Darwin's theory of evolution, and even which animals make good pets and which ones don't.
The award-winning illustrations are also unique and action-packed, and they perfectly complement the text.
Children ages 2 and up will enjoy having this story read to them, and children ages 4-8 will probably be able to read the simple text on their own. I highly recommend this book to people of all ages! It's an ancient Indian treasure.

Here I come to save the day

Described in its day as attaining, "a fluidity rare in the medium", this illustrated book of woodcuts tells a simple fable that has remained beloved for decades. Claiming to be a tale told from ancient India, the story follows a man, a mouse, and the downfall of pride. A wise hermit lives alone in the forest when he happens to spy a mouse about to be eaten. Fearful for the little creature, the man changes his new friend into a cat. When a dog threatens his cat, he turns the mouse into a dog, and then (after a similar situation) into a tiger. Now a fine feline of a beast, the former mouse lords his newfound state over the other animals of the forest. After planning the death of his benefactor, the man changes the tiger into a mouse again and everything goes back to as it was (with the mouse, I suspect, a little wiser).
The woodcuts are fine indeed. Delicate little illustrations imbued with life and verve. From snarling dogs to transformed mice the images stand for themselves. I hadn't been aware of the author/illustrator's work before reading her winning, "Stone Soup". After comparing the two, I have to say they're definitely of equal interest. It's nice to see a book giving a clear sighted look at a fable from another country (in this case, India) without any stereotypes or racism. All in all, it's a nice little book with a strong moral core.

Beautiful Book

O my God. I have never admired a math book soo much.(except my pre-cal) I am serious. It is SOO easy to undersand...No mumbo-jumbo language. Plain Simple ENGLISH.. I took it for Cal. one and Two. I had taken to take cal one during 5 week intense course. Screwed up big time. I partially blamed swokoskski cal. one book (sp?), and partially my teacher.. ofcourse I don't wanna blame myself =).. LoL.. Nevertheless.. This book was light at end of the tunnel.

Well written, well designed

I purchased this book as a remedy for my struggles with the Calculus: Early Transcendentals volume by Stewart. The two are like night and day. Stewart's exposition is, at best, of uneven quality, and all too often seems not to illuminate at all. The Anton, Bivens, and Davis (hereafter ABD) has marvelous clarity of exposition, well ordered, logical, and illuminating. The exercise sets in Stewart are apparently intended to provoke a stream of epiphanies--before having given sufficient practice to cement understanding--but fail to do so. The ABD exercises increase more linearly in difficulty, providing greater understanding and giving the student a solid grip on the concepts of the chapter. In short, ABD succeeds, and Stewart fails.

If you examine the reviews of Stewart's volume, you will find the most scathing are written by instructors who used the book. My own second semester instructor was a big Stewart fan, but I engaged her in many discussions on specific issue I found, and reviewed with her the alternate presentation in ABD; she found she agreed with me, again and again, and she was a master's candidate in math at the time.

This book is an excellent volume, if what you need is to actually understand calculus.

Good book to learn calculus

I purchased these books because these are the ones I use in my calculus AB class. They were firtst recommended by the district and I do supplement work to prepare students for the AP test, but the books have plenty of prblems to do and it is not difficult to read.

For someone who isn't privy to her first book, this book is fantastic. For someone who has eaten the Tate's chocolate chip cookie - this recipe in the book tastes exactly the same - although with my oven I have to cook the cookies about 13 1/2 minutes to obtain the "crispy" cookie like the Tate cookie. I followed her instructions to the letter, didn't overmix, used my Silpat - and they are amazing. I had only one small cookie because I'm low carbing - but this morning - there are only a few left - meaning my husband and son ate them up! Great book - highly recommend.

Tate's Bakeshop is one of my favorites, so I was happy to get this book as a gift. I've tried a few recipes and all have been easy and beyond tasty. The chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter frosting are one of the best desserts I've ever had. Carrot cake and the signature chocolate chip cookies are first rate.

About the Author
Russell Freedman is the author of over thirty-five nonfiction books.  His works have received many awards, among them the Robert F. Silbert Award, a Newberry Medal, and a Newberry Honor.  He was recently awarded the May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture Award for his contributions to the work of children's literature.  He lives in New York City.

Immigrant Kids - A Must Read!

This wonderful non-fiction book will be a hit with students at the 4th-6th grade level. The real life pictures of immigrant children in the neighborhoods of New York during the late 1800's and early 1900's that appear on almost every page of the book should hold the interest of even the most reluctant readers. However, while the reading itself is not too difficult for most 4th-6th grade students, much of the vocabulary explaining the era of that time will be unfamiliar to them so covering this book as a read-aloud may be most beneficial. Immigrant Kids provides a wonderful way to introduce students to immigration in the past and show how it has changed over time. It lends itself well to a discussion in history class on the various cultures that became part of the giant "mixing pot" we now call our country. Because this book is set in New York it can further be used to teach about the city of New York and its early beginnings. Possibly the one thing that will interest students the most about this book is that it is written from the perspective of children like themselves. Overall the historical content of this book is very well defined and accurate and the photograph driven text provides readers with a very non-threatening approach to information books. It is a must read in any 4th-6th grade history curriculum and can work as a wonderful addition to a reading curriculum when used in accompaniment with other books both fictional and factual dealing with the topic of immigration.

This book is an incredible description of life as an immgran

The life of an immigrant child was harsh. Russell Freedman accomplished his goal of showing how difficult an immigrant's life was through the use of descriptive words and photographs that make you thankful that you do not have to live like immigrant children of the past. The photographs captured our attention. Our fourth grade teacher shared this book with us. It helped us to learn about the conditions immigrants had to live under. We highly recommend this book!
