The Summer Olympics of Munich 1972 were called “The Cheerful Games”, but that was before the spectre of terrorism marked them forever in the history of sport. XX Olympiad, the eighteenth volume in The Olympic Century series, recalls the tragic events in Munich, along with the many moments of triumph.
The book recounts the 18-hour standoff between police and eight Palestinian terrorists who took 11 Israeli athletes and coaches hostage in the Olympic Village. All the hostages and three terrorists would die during the ordeal. The Games resumed after 24 hours, and the heroes of Munich emerged: American swimmer Mark Spitz, who would claim a then-record seven gold medals; Soviet gymnast Olga Korbut, who charmed the world in winning three golds; and a 15-year-old Australian named Shane Gould, who challenged Spitz in the pool with three gold-medal performances. The book also recounts the curious story of marathon winner Frank Shorter entering the stadium running behind an imposter who had joined the race in the final stages.
The book then turns its focus to the 1976 Winter Games of Innsbruck, Austria. The book profiles athletes like Austrian favourite Franz Klammer, who won the downhill with a heart-stopping final run; US figure skater Dorothy Hamill, who won gold and sparked a worldwide trend in hairstyles; and West German skier Rosi Mittermaier, who missed out on winning three golds by just 0.13 seconds.
Juan Antonio Samaranch, former President of the International Olympic Committee, called The Olympic Century, “The most comprehensive history of the Olympic games ever published”.

Fantastic book on 1972 Games, VERY thorough text, great pics
By Allen Jackson
I bought this book hoping merely to have sort of a nice coffee table book, assuming there would be some nice color photos and maybe a bit of narrative with which I was unfamiliar. But I was pleasantly surprised to see how INCREDIBLY thorough it is, and how completely it discusses even the various mishaps at the 1972 Munich Summer Games in particular, such as with the various US athletes who got screwed by political goings-on.
The book recounts both glorious athletic accomplishments AND the controversies: as to the latter, from the case of the two world-record-holding American 100-meter sprinters who didn't get to the track on time for their quarter-final heats (thus a Soviet won the gold in the men's 100m track finals), to the US-USSR gold-medal basketball game fiaso (with the Russians getting 3 seconds added to the clock at the end of the game-- twice more, AFTER the game had "first" ended-- in order that they could eventually make the winning basket), to gold-medal-winning 400m US 16-year-old swimmer Rick DeMont's disqualification (from that victory plus being disallowed from competing in his specialty event, the 1500 meters, afterward) for using a banned substance-- merely his allergy medication!-- which WAS duly reported to the US Olympic medical authorities well in advance by DeMont-- to US pole vaulter Bob Seagren's poles being confiscated in the middle of the night by the IAAF in an apparent effort to deprive him of a 2nd consecutive gold medal (he'd won gold in 1968; this time, he came in 2nd to the East German who'd finished 2nd in 1968), to the horrible boxing decisions (particularly against American Reggie Jones and Brit Alan Minter--the latter to become a professional world champion 7 years after this book was published), and so much more at Munich 1972, including the Palestinian terrorists' murder of the 11 Israeli athletes (discussed in REMARKABLE detail that I'd not seen in any other books on that subject alone).
Discussion is also devoted to 1972 Olympic successes, such as marathon gold-medalist Frank Shorter of the US, 7-gold-medal-winning US swimmer Mark Spitz, amazing risk-taker-while-smiling Soviet gymnast Olga Korbut, 800m runner Dave Wottle, US boxers Duane Bobick, Sugar Ray Seales, & particularly (Cuban) Teofilo Stevenson, and others.
The book shockingly (since it's published by the Int'l Olympic Committee and the US Olympic Committee jointly) spends a number of pages detailing IOC president Avery Brundage's decision to finally step down, along with even particulars about his various romantic affairs! Not exactly self-serving for the IOC to include this lengthy discussion in this book, but they do! Great reading!
This book is simply fantastic, and rivals the larger US Olympic Committee book on the same 1972 Games published in 1973. Its section on the 1976 Winter Games is not as thorough, but is quite good nevertheless, and discusses how DENVER Colorado, actually, had been awarded the 1976 Games and how that city became the only city in history (during peacetime) to voluntarily give up the Games once it been successful in being awarded them (they took place in Innsbruck, Austria ultimately).
I HIGHLY recommend this book. Enjoy!
