Review
Moskalenko wisely avoids the repertoire format, providing multiple replies to each white system. This approach should help Pirc players cultivate that essential virtue, flexibility. The main attractions are the accessible and enthusiastic explanations.
(James Vigus CHESS Magazine)
A fantastic book on the Pirc-Modern! When you play the Pirc, or against it, you cannot do without it.
(Martin Rieger Rochade Europa Magazine)
Moskalenko is up-to-date, his recommendations are easy to understand, he always points at equally playable alternatives, always includes must-play moves and he enriches theory. This is not only a presentation of theory in both openings but also a guide on how to play them. An excellent book.
(German Correspondence Chess Federation)
Myriad plans and setups are thoroughly discussed and helpfully summarized. Along the way, plenty of resources are provided for meeting each white system.
--Paul Kane; Manchester Chess Federation (Paul Kane Methodology and Research Technology)
Recommended for players who want to try out this opening complex as well as players who already have it on their repertoire. Full of resources, and the author does an excellent job of pointing them out, which makes the book both instructive and fun to read.
(Peter Doggers ChessVibes)
The game sections are bursting with ideas, plenty of helpful explanations. New moves and concepts abound. Viktor has done it again. Bravo! Put in the buy list.

Strong GM analysis of a sharp opening
By Christopher J. Falter
In the final round of the 2013 World Championship Candidates tournament, Kramnik needed to win as black in order to overtake Carlsen. What opening did he choose? The Pirc! It invites a sharp struggle, for sure; in order to gain counterattacking possibilities, black concedes a space advantage and declares himself ready to defend against attempts to smash his kingside. The chesstempo.com database shows that the Pirc and Modern together have the lowest drawing percentage (34.3%) of any typical GM response to 1. e4--even lower than the Sicilian Defense. It's not the highest scoring black defense, but it's no worse than anything other than the Sicilian. Because it is relatively rare, in fact, it is an excellent choice for the club player who wants to know the terrain better than his opponent without devoting half his spare time to opening theory.
GM Viktor Moskalenko is one of the world's most prominent experts in the Pirc/Modern; of the 37 GM games he analyzes, in fact, he played 15 (12 as black and 3 as white). Other GMs who took the black side are Kramnik, Nakamura, Grischuk, Ivanchuk, and Ponomariov. Moskalenko provides a cornucopia of novelties, weapons (sharp ideas that deserve more testing), tricks (tactical traps to be wary of), and thorough analysis of which lines are most (and least) promising. This is no database dump, either; his analysis shows that the "Benoni hybrid" (1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 g6 4. f4 Bg7 5. Nf3 O-O 6. Bd3 Na6) is barely playable against a well-prepared white opponent, even though it scores 46.5% in master play. The author highlights the novelties, weapons, tricks, and "keep in mind" (strategical ideas) sections by calling them out in blocks with gray background, which helps you follow and learn his analysis. And of course, when you go back to review a game, it's easy to spot the key ideas.
To give you a flavor for Moskalenko's fine writing, his analysis of Seirawan - Peralta 2011 features 55 diagrams, 12 weapons, a trick, a "keep in mind," and several puzzles which illustrate interesting ideas in sidelines. Oh yes, I should have mentioned the copious diagrams as well; some publishers are very stingy with them, because they require extra pages (and printing costs), but Moskalenko provides plentiful diagrams to enhance the clarity and learning experience.
The book abounds with ideas for both black and white, so I would highly recommend it both to those who open with 1. e4 as white, as well as to those who want to play it as black. In fact, in the 37 main games white scores about 45%, which is amazingly high for a book that espouses the Pirc/Modern. You've got to give Moskalenko credit for his even-handed analysis. The flip side of exploring ideas for both sides is that Moskalenko does not really provide a simple repertoire, so the book is probably more suitable for an intermediate to advanced club player than for a beginner/advanced beginner. But make no mistake about it: if you want an expert guide to a sharp opening response to 1.e4, you'll enjoy the Perfect Pirc-Modern.
Finally, I must commend Moskalenko for his generous supply of anecdotes and photos of grandmasters who play the Pirc/Modern; the book is much more fun to read than the typical opening tome.
The publisher provided a review copy of this book to me in exchange for my honest review. My ratings of the publisher's books have ranged from 3 stars to 5 stars.

Play for a winat all cost !
By Ellis E. Jones
Moskalenko is clear in this effort. You play the Pirc/Modern for a win not a draw. I have played the Pirc/Modern for a long time and find this an excellent book. Recommend it completely for the devotee and tthe novice "RAT" player as Duncan Suttles called it. I recommend this book highly and a book by Cyrus Lakdawala,"The Modern Defence: Move by Move" and his companion book,"d6:Move by Move". All three are lovly books and I can say they have increased my winning percentage in my local club.

Even the best authors occasionally falter
By M. Ararat
The main issue I have with this book is the insuficient treatment of some critical lines in the Pirc/Modern.
For example, in page 131 Mosalenko states: 9.Be2 can be safely answered with 9...e5.
In the same position Larry Kaufmann (in his Black and White repertoire New in Chess 2012)in chapter 4 Pirc, Modern a Philidor shows that 10. d4xe5 Nd7xe5 11. 0-0 Ne5xf3 + 12. Be2xf3 Bc8-e6 13.Be3f4-Rad8 14. Qd2- Qc8 15. Bg5 (instead of Qe3?!) Rd8-d7 16.Rf1-e1 and White is better (Model game Nijboer Friso vs Guidarelli Laurent Vlissingen 2010)
Mosalenko's book was published one year after Kaufmann's book (2012) by the same publisher (New in chess).Unfortunately, the Perfect Pirc- Modern does not address the lines other authors suggested against the Pirc/Modern complex. In contrast, James Vigus update of his work on the Pirc takes into consideration Andrew Greet's anti Pirc Ideas (Beating Unusual chess defenses everyman 2011)to provide the reader/buyer with state of the art ideas in the Pirc.
A word of caution to the potential buyer before spending your hard earn money on this book.
The Pirc is a difficult opening to play as the final round of the recent World Chess Championship candidates tournament demonstrates. Vladimir Kramnik went all in with the Pirc against Ivanchuck (a Pirc expert BTW). Ivanchuck used the quiet h3 system and forced Kramnik to take an unreasonable amount of risk to play for a win. Later, as Carlsen was defeated by Svidller Krammnik tried to stabilize the position to do what he does best (to get a draw from a difficult position). Unfortunately, the resulting Pirc position was beyond "repair' and Vlad went down in flames (as well as his options to fight for the World champion title). From new in chess website: "In the commentary to the game in this issue Daniel Gormally rightly blames Kramnik's choice of Pirc Defence, an aggressive system that Vlad does not normally play. He draws an historic parallel with the last game of 1978 World Championship Match. In that encounter Korchnoi also chose an unfamiliar system (for him!) Pirc Defence, thereby losing the game and the match"
In summary if you are looking for an easy to play opening to complicate the last round (money game) and you are not familiar with the Pirc think twice. Sometimes is better to stick with what you know best. A good, recent example is Velloti (2433) vs Shetty (2446) US K-12 championship (0- 1 in 72 moves). Despite the need to avoid a draw Black played the Slav (no fear of the drawish exchange variation)" Even though the Slav can become quite drawish depending on what White plays, I wanted to stick to what I knew best."(chess life June 2013)
